Hoy les traigo un hecho muy triste en la historia de la música venezolana, ya que en el mayor sentido humanista y cultural significó una gran pérdida para mi país y estoy seguro que para el mundo también. Sin embargo, el legado de estos desafortunados protagonistas perdurará por siempre en la memoria de la comunidad musical venezolana.
Hello, friends of the community! Today I bring you a very sad event in the history of Venezuelan music, which in the humanistic and cultural sense meant a great loss for my country and I am sure for the world as well. However, the legacy of these unfortunate protagonists will last forever in the memory of the Venezuelan music community.

Hace 46 años se produjo la mayor tragedia en la historia de la música latinoamericana cuando el avión que transportaba al Orfeón Universitario de la Universidad Central de Venezuela se estrelló en las Islas Azores de Portugal, ubicadas en medio del océano Atlántico.

Forty-six years ago, the greatest tragedy in the history of Latin American music occurred when the plane carrying the Orfeón Universitario de la Universidad Central de Venezuela crashed in the Azores Islands of Portugal, located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

El Orfeón Universitario de la UCV es una institución musical que forma parte de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, una de las principales instituciones educativas autónomas localizadas en el oeste de Caracas, Venezuela. Fue fundado en 1943 por Antonio Estévez durante la rectoría de Rafael Pizani. Pionera de las agrupaciones corales universitarias venezolanas, es el coro activo más antiguo del país.
The Orfeón Universitario de la UCV is a musical institution that is part of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, one of the main autonomous educational institutions located in western Caracas, Venezuela. It was founded in 1943 by Antonio Estévez during the rectorship of Rafael Pizani. Pioneer of Venezuelan university choral groups, it is the oldest active choir in the country.

La Tragedia // The tragedy
El orfeón se preparaba para salir del país a una gira que se realizaría en Europa, cuyo primer destino seria el Festival Internacional de Canto Coral en Barcelona, España, al cual habían sido especialmente invitados. La UCV alegó que no podía cubrir los gastos del viaje, por lo que la FAV (Fuerza aérea Venezolana) se había presentado como una opción.
The orfeón was preparing to leave the country for a tour that would take place in Europe, whose first destination would be the International Festival of Choral Singing in Barcelona, Spain, to which they had been specially invited. The UCV claimed that it could not cover the expenses of the trip, so the FAV (Venezuelan Air Force) had been presented as an option.

El viaje se realizo un 3 de septiembre de 1976 con un avión Hércules C-130 de la Fuerza Aérea Venezolana. Tenía espacio suficiente para los 68 pasajeros (52 estudiantes, 11 militares y 5 acompañantes). Lamentablemente, las voces de los músicos que componían tan prestigiosa institución se apagaron sin llegar a su destino. El único miembro que sobrevivió a este hecho, había logrado viajar a España dos días antes para preparar las presentaciones.
The trip took place on September 3, 1976 with a Hercules C-130 aircraft of the Venezuelan Air Force. It had enough space for 68 passengers (52 students, 11 military and 5 companions). Unfortunately, the voices of the musicians that conformed such a prestigious institution were extinguished without reaching their destination. The only member who survived this event had managed to travel to Spain two days earlier to prepare the presentations.
La causa del accidente se atribuyó a una fuerte tormenta en las Islas Azores (Portugal), en pleno Océano Atlántico.

Por supuesto, el accidente causó gran conmoción en todo el país, la fuerte noticia se extendió rápidamente por todo el territorio nacional, que lloró desconsoladamente las 68 almas que habían partido inesperadamente de este mundo. Imagínense la pérdida cultural y musical que significó para Venezuela, cuando ese grupo de las mejores voces del país dejó de sonar. Fue, sin duda, un hecho lamentable.
Of course, the accident caused great commotion throughout the country, the strong news spread quickly throughout the national territory, which mourned disconsolately the 68 souls who had departed unexpectedly from this world. Imagine the cultural and musical loss it meant for Venezuela, when this group of the best voices of the country ceased to sound. It was, undoubtedly, a regrettable event.
Las siguientes fotos muestran cómo se vivió el momento en el que el maestro fundador Antonio Estévez, sumido en un profundo dolor, realizó el merecido homenaje de despedida bajo su dirección y acompañado por antiguos miembros del Orfeón Universitario que se reunieron de nuevo para despedir a sus compañeros.
The following photos show how the moment was felt in which the founding maestro Antonio Estévez, submerged in deep pain, carried out the well-deserved farewell tribute under his direction and accompanied by former members of the Orfeón Universitario who gathered again to bid farewell to their companions.
Luego de la tragedia de Las Azores, Raúl Delgado Estévez asumió la dirección del Orfeón Universitario manteniéndose como su director por 23 años y donde desarrolló una intensa actividad musical coral en giras nacionales e internacionales que incluyeron discografía, presentaciones en numerosas salas y premios internacionales.
After the Azores tragedy, Raúl Delgado Estévez assumed the direction of the Orfeón Universitario and remained its director for 23 years, where he developed an intense choral musical activity in national and international tours that included discography, presentations in numerous halls and international awards.
