Gene Taylor was an American double bassist influenced by the greats Oscar Pettiford and Ray Brown. He began his musical career in Detroit and belonged to pianist Horace Silver’s group from 1958 to 1963, with which he took part in five of its most important works. Then he was part of trumpeter Blue Mitchell’s quintet until 1965, appearing on four albums, and from 1966 to 1968 he toured with popular singer and pianist Nina Simone. Taylor wrote the music and lyrics for the song “Why? (The King of Love is Dead)” as a memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr., which was recorded by Simone herself and included in a documentary on the life of this famous activist leader. He also collaborated with other important musicians, such as tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Junior Cook, and pianists Barry Harris and Duke Pearson. From 1968 to 1976 he played with folk and country singer, guitarist and songwriter Judy Collins. He made extensive television appearances with both Simone and Collins, and taught music in New York public schools from 1985 to 1990. He died in 2001 at the age of 72.

The group then plays a pre-set arrangement mixed with brief solos by Cook until the theme is reexposed.
