Horace Silver construyó su carrera a base de canciones joviales y pegadizas a tiempos medio y medio-rápido interpretadas por grupos con excelentes músicos, pero su parte débil eran los tiempos lentos: las baladas. Horace Silver built his career on jovial and catchy songs in medium and medium-fast times performed by groups with excellent musicians, but his weak part was the slow tempos: the ballads. His resources didn’t include the soft undulations nor the sentimental flourishes that other pianists use in such cases. When he finally wrote his master ballad, it was not about love and romance, but about peace and serenity. His piano technique was not as spectacular as that of virtuosos Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, but when he played his funky gospel-flavored tunes he was unequaled.

Silver’s praise of tranquility on this ballad is so natural that you might think that these kinds of meditative pieces were the norm for him, but none of his other standards resemble this one. In this track you won’t find any infectious melody, any surprising interlude or any harmonic change that takes the song in an unexpected direction. Instead, the soloist swirls around a series of moderate resolution chords creating a soothing circular motion. Lyricist and pianist Doug Carn provided lyrics and the extraordinary singer Bobby McFerrin delivers a version on his album Bobby McFerrin (1982) which can also be found below.
Mitchell toca la melodía de un tema a tiempo lento adornado por cortas intervenciones de Silver mientras Cook hace un acompañamiento por detrás. Mitchell plays the melody of a slow-beat tune adorned with short interventions by Silver while Cook provides backing from behind. At the end of the song, Mitchell goes on taking his solo that calls for calm and tranquility. He is followed by Silver with a slow discourse conducive to meditation, but then livens it up by doubling the time. Mitchell then returns to reexpose the ballad, which ends with a short phrase by Silver and two double bass notes.
