Sinceramente, nunca antes había escuchado metal. Quiero decir, no es que no supiera de la existencia del género. Por supuesto, ya me he topado con alguna que otra canción o artista dedicado a este tipo de música, pero nunca me había dado la oportunidad de apreciarlo correctamente. Después de todo, no es como si viviera debajo de una roca, ya saben...
Pero hace un par de días leí esta reseña sobre el album Master of Puppets de Metallica y no pude evitar sentirme atraído con la idea de detenerme a escuchar un género del cual solo tenía como referencia Raining Blood de Slayer en Guitar Hero III.

Honestly, I had never listened to metal before. I mean, it's not that I didn't know about the existence of the genre. Of course, I've come across the occasional song or artist dedicated to this type of music before, but I'd never given myself the chance to appreciate it properly. After all, it's not like I live under a rock, you know?
But a couple of days ago I read this review of Metallica's Master of Puppets album and I couldn't help but be drawn to the idea of stopping to listen to a genre that I only had Slayer's Raining Blood as a reference in Guitar Hero III.
Lo único que me atraía del metal era la virtuosidad que poseen muchos de sus intérpretes más destacados, pero descubrí que lo que me estaba perdiendo era más que un despliegue de velocidad, furia y sonidos estridentes. Por lo que no puedo sentir más que agradecimiento hacia @discouragedones por haber escrito el post que me motivó a detenerme a apreciar y descubrir mi gusto por este género.
Este será el primero de una serie de post en los que analizaré y trataré de explicar por qué me he enganchado con algunas de las piezas de este álbum en particular (si bien como un todo es fenomenal, hay varias que realmente considero espectaculares)
Ahora sí, empecemos...
The only thing that attracted me of metal was the virtuosity possessed by many of its most prominent performers, but I discovered that what I was missing was more than a display of speed, fury and strident sounds. For which I can feel nothing but gratitude to @discouragedones for writing the post that motivated me to stop to appreciate and discover my liking for this genre.
This will be the first of a series of posts in which I will analyze and try to explain why I've become hooked on some of the pieces on this particular album (while as a whole it's phenomenal, there are several that I really consider spectacular).
Now let's get started...
Llevo un tiempo leyendo a Lovecraft. Tuve la dicha de hacerme con una compilación de sus obras en un libro digital en dos volúmenes y no paro de asombrarme con la narrativa del terror cósmico y onírico del maestro de Providence. Así que comprenderán que cuando supe que The Thing That Should Not Be estaba inspirada en los relatos que giran en torno a Cthulu, mi medidor de interés se rompió.
Y es que tanto la música como la letra hacen un trabajo increíble al retratar el terror que produce el que tal vez es el más famoso de los Primigenios.
Con referencias a su poder para enloquecer a los hombres, el culto de sus seguidores quienes esperan impacientes su retorno desde las profundidades, la furia con la que azotará finalmente el mundo cuando sea liberado de R'lyeh, etc. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con Eamonn Stack cuando dice: Metallica “…no hacen canciones, sino que cuentan historias”.
I've been reading Lovecraft for a while now. I had the joy of getting my hands on a compilation of his works in a two-volume digital book and I never cease to be amazed by the cosmic and dreamlike horror narrative of the master of Providence. So you will understand that when I learned that The Thing That Should Not Be was inspired by the stories that revolve around Cthulu, my interest-meter was broken.
And the fact is that both the music and the lyrics do an incredible job of portraying the terror produced by perhaps the most famous of the Great Old Ones.
With references to his power to drive men mad, the cult of his followers who impatiently await his return from the depths, the fury with which he will finally scourge the world when he is released from R'lyeh, and so on. I totally agree with Eamonn Stack when he says: Metallica "...don't make songs, they tell stories".
Por supuesto, todo esto con un arreglo musical que nos permite imaginarnos dentro de ese vórtice de locura y terror submarino.
Y es que, desde el comienzo, con una intro a un ritmo pausado, sentimos como nos sumerge lenta y progresivamente a las profundidades del mar hasta colocarnos frente a frente con el “morador de la locura”.
Toda la obra está dotada de una energía que evoca poder y grandiosidad. Pero que no se desborda en ella, sino que avanza paulatina e indeteniblemente hacia su ascensión desde la “ciudad caída” hasta el mundo mortal.
Of course, all this with a musical arrangement that allows us to imagine ourselves inside that vortex of madness and underwater terror.
From the very beginning, with a slow-paced intro, we feel how it slowly and progressively plunges us into the depths of the sea until we come face to face with the "dweller of madness".
The whole work is endowed with an energy that evokes power and grandeur. But it does not overflow in it, but advances gradually and unstoppably towards its ascent from the "fallen city" to the mortal world.
Escala Frigia Dominante. Frecuentemente utilizada y relacionada con la música española y árabe, le confiere al solo de guitarra cierto aire místico y misterioso.
Dominant Phrygian Scale. Frequently used and related to Spanish and Arabic music, it gives the guitar solo a certain mystical and mysterious air.
Después del segundo coro, cuyo último verso termina en “In madness you dwell”, nos encontramos con un solo de guitarra que evoca la locura que Cthulu es capaz de provocar a los hombres. Con notas distorsionadas, inestables, trémulas y gorjeantes (trills) en una escala frigia dominante que nos embulle y nos ahoga hasta el vacío.

Justo entonces empezamos a escuchar en el fondo lamentos de la guitarra, pareciendo gritos ahogados perdidos en la inmensidad del mar.
Y así, el ritmo de la guitarra se mantiene constante sin acabar. Fundiéndose con el silencio, sin detenerse nunca, inmortal…
After the second chorus, whose last verse ends in "In madness you dwell", we find a guitar solo that evokes the madness that Cthulu is capable of provoking in men. With distorted, unstable, tremulous and trill notes in a dominant Phrygian scale that engulfs us and drowns us into emptiness.

Just then we begin to hear in the background the wailing of the guitar, resembling drowned cries lost in the immensity of the sea.
And so, the rhythm of the guitar remains constant without ending. Merging with the silence, without ever stopping, immortal...
No sé ustedes, pero a mí definitivamente se me ponen los pelos de punta con esta canción. Tengo que decir que lamento mucho haber llegado tan tarde al Metal jaja

I don't know about you, but this song definitely makes my hair stand on end. I have to say that I'm really sorry for being so late to Metal haha.
