Suez Canal Anniversary- My Actifit Report Card: November 17 2022

The Suez Canal was officially opened on 17 November 1869 after almost 10 years of construction. It is a canal of just under 165 kilometres in length and a depth of around 25 metres that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is therefore the shortest maritime route between Europe and Asia, making it a key strategic location for international trade.
Around 1.5 million workers, mostly Egyptians, were involved in this gigantic construction project, of whom approximately 150,000 died.
Today, an average of 50 ships pass through it every day, which represents 12% of the international Martino trade per year.
