Nimona es una producción reciente de Netflix basada en una historieta que se publicó alrededor de ocho años atrás por Stevenson en la editorial HarperCollins. A pesar de su fresco lanzamiento se ha vuelto bastante popular para los asiduos espectadores de Netflix, sobre todo para el público infantil y sus padres.

En realidad nunca tuve intención de verla, para ser sincera todavía no me enteraba de su existencia, pero me reuní en el “cine” familiar y una vez que empezó a reproducirse la película, llamó mi atención y me quedé hasta el final, algo que no esperaba hacer.

Todos estábamos absortos, pasando un buen rato, porque logra ser divertida, emocionante y también sentimental. Mi intención era hacer una reseña de esta obra para quien quisiera verla, pero, escribiendo esta publicación me dejé llevar y terminé analizando ciertas escenas que me conmovieron bastante y por eso quise hablar sobre algunos mensajes que pude notar en esta historia.

Nimona is a recent Netflix production based on a comic book that was published about eight years ago by Stevenson at HarperCollins Publishing. Despite its fresh release it has become quite popular with regular Netflix viewers, especially with children's audiences and their parents.

I never really intended to watch it, to be honest I was still not aware of its existence, but I gathered at the family "cinema" and once the movie started playing, it caught my attention and I stayed until the end, something I did not expect to do.

We were all engrossed, having a good time, because it manages to be funny, exciting and also sentimental. My intention was to make a review of this play for anyone who wanted to see it, but, writing this publication I got carried away and ended up analyzing certain scenes that moved me a lot and that is why I wanted to talk about some messages that I could notice in this story.

To do so I will have to do a lot of spoilers so if you plan to see this movie I recommend you not to read the following paragraphs of this post. Now yes, welcome to my blog and greetings wherever you are 🙂

De qué trata - what it is about

El reino de Gloriana, situado dentro de inmensos muros que lo protegen del exterior, entrena caballeros de sangre real que puedan enfrentar a los monstruos que acechan alrededor. La reina actual decide romper esta tradición al darle la oportunidad a Ballister Blackheart de convertirse en caballero, pese a que no es descendiente directo de Gloriana.

Con él empieza el sueño de que cualquier persona puede convertirse en caballero. Todos están escépticos y sienten rechazo al principio, pero cuando empiezan a aceptar el hecho y a ver posible una vida donde todos tengan la misma oportunidad de ser “héroes” Ballister asesina a la reina públicamente, tirando el sueño por la borda.

Con un brazo menos y huyendo de los que le persiguen, se refugia en una guarida donde planifica el modo de saber qué ocurrió realmente y cómo puede limpiar su nombre ante la institución y el hombre que ama, porque es inocente.

Es en este momento donde aparece Nimona, una adolescente con una energía inagotable, rara, loca, que por algún motivo decide ayudarlo, convirtiéndose en su “secuaz”. Él no quiere su ayuda, pero cuando se da cuenta que puede resultar útil acepta, y más que su cómplice, va volviéndose su amiga. Sin embargo, ¿pensará lo mismo de ella cuando se entere que es una cambiaformas? Lo que él, en la institución, juró destruir.

The kingdom of Gloriana, located within immense walls that protect it from the outside, trains knights of royal blood who can face the monsters that lurk around. The current queen decides to break this tradition by giving Ballister Blackheart the opportunity to become a knight, even though he is not a direct descendant of Gloriana.

With him begins the dream that anyone can become a knight. Everyone is skeptical and feels rejection at first, but when they begin to accept the fact and see possible a life where everyone has the same opportunity to be "heroes" Ballister murders the queen publicly, throwing the dream away.

With one arm missing and on the run from those who pursue him, he takes refuge in a hideout where he plans how to find out what really happened and how he can clear his name before the institution and the man he loves, because he is innocent.

It is at this moment when Nimona appears, a teenager with inexhaustible energy, strange, crazy, who for some reason decides to help him, becoming his "henchwoman". He doesn't want her help, but when she realizes that she can be useful, she accepts, and more than his accomplice, she becomes his friend. However, will he think the same of her when he learns that she is a shapeshifter? What he, in the institution, swore to destroy.

No tenía idea de que esta era una película para niños, primero porque el de la idea de verla fue un adulto y segundo porque al tener acción desde un principio, vemos a un Ballister amputado que nos silenció a todos en la sala. Luego es que se relaja más el ambiente, y aparecen escenas cómicas que me hicieron reír.

Desde esta escena podemos ver una idea que maneja esta película y que se repite en todo el filme, los prejuicios. Al ser Ballister alguien que no posee sangre real, lo inculpan para sacarlo del juego y que no pueda convertirse en caballero, porque no es “digno”. Aunque, claro, hubo otros motivos para hacer esto, aunque no lo explican del todo bien.

Cuando aparece Nimona y vas conociendo a los personajes y de qué va todo, se vuelve entretenida y graciosa, te sorprendes de los pensamientos de la chica, porque en vez de querer hacer el bien, como todos los personajes buenos, más bien parece querer causar desastre. Sin embargo, te das cuenta de que oculta algo, y que detrás de esa sonrisa, o esa manera de ser alocada, impulsiva, y con expresiones faciales muy exageradas y graciosas hay algo más oscuro.

Y no se trata solo de que es alguien que puede cambiar de formas, porque sí, Nimona puede convertirse en cualquier animal o ser humano, sino que lleva por dentro un dolor que la ha hecho ser como es y que podría terminar desencadenando en algo malo.

I had no idea that this was a movie for children, first because the one who had the idea of watching it was an adult and second because it has action from the beginning, we see an amputee Ballister that silenced us all in the room. Then the atmosphere becomes more relaxed, and there are comic scenes that made me laugh.

From this scene we can see an idea that drives this film and that is repeated throughout the film, prejudice. As Ballister is someone who does not have royal blood, he is framed to take him out of the game so that he cannot become a knight, because he is not "worthy". Although, of course, there were other motives for doing this, although they don't explain it all that well.

When Nimona appears and you get to know the characters and what it's all about, it becomes entertaining and funny, you are surprised by the girl's thoughts, because instead of wanting to do good, like all good characters, she seems to want to cause disaster. However, you realize that she is hiding something, and that behind that smile, or that way of being crazy, impulsive, and with very exaggerated and funny facial expressions there is something darker.

And it is not just that she is someone who can change forms, because yes, Nimona can become any animal or human being, but that she carries inside a pain that has made her the way she is and that could end up triggering something bad.

Uno de los mensajes que pude ver en esta película es que no se puede ir en contra de lo que uno es, claro ejemplo de ello es cuando ella confiesa que desde siempre ha podido convertirse en lo que ella ha querido y que no hacerlo hace que se sienta mal, que es algo que está en ella, tan natural como querer estornudar.

Sé que algunos pensarán que esta película tiene mensajes subliminales y que se están refiriendo a la sexualidad de las personas (y no digo que no), pero sirve, sirve para darte cuenta de cómo se sienten los demás, bien sea un grupo reducido de personas pero que no por eso no merecen respeto.

Las cosas avanzan mientras Ballister intenta demostrar a la institución a la que se ha dedicado en cuerpo y alma que es inocente, a pesar de que todos decidieron condenarlo a la primera, sin importarles lo que tuviera para decir. Esta institución tiene sus fallos, y poco a poco se va dando cuenta de que ha estado cumpliendo con su deber con los ojos cerrados, sin cuestionar nada, sin entender realmente si está haciendo lo correcto o no, y es que muchas veces hacemos eso, como por ejemplo al seguir fanáticamente una religión, o incluso en la política. Nos dejamos amoldar a la conveniencia de los demás, y al regresar, por ejemplo, de una guerra, somos llamados héroes, pese a que para convertirse en uno es necesario herir y matar.

Héroes desde una sola perspectiva.

A Ballister le cuesta aceptar que Nimona es un ser diferente, y le hace un montón de preguntas a cada rato que la chica se niega en contestar. Tiene cuidado de llamarla monstruo, porque es algo que ella odia, pero es lo que se les ha enseñado en ese reino, que todo lo diferente lo es, y que para ser llamados héroes tienen que destruir lo que no es igual a ellos, porque les asusta lo raro, y porque lo consideran una amenaza, aunque sean inofensivos.

One of the messages I could see in this film is that you can't go against who you are, a clear example of this is when she confesses that she has always been able to become what she wanted to become and that not doing so makes her feel bad, that it is something that is in her, as natural as wanting to sneeze.

I know that some people will think that this movie has subliminal messages and that they are referring to people's sexuality (and I'm not saying that it doesn't), but it serves, it serves to make you realize how others feel, even if it is a small group of people, but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve respect.

Things move forward as Ballister tries to prove to the institution to which he has dedicated himself body and soul that he is innocent, despite the fact that they all decided to condemn him at the first time, regardless of what he had to say. This institution has its faults, and little by little he realizes that he has been doing his duty with his eyes closed, without questioning anything, without really understanding if he is doing the right thing or not, and it is that many times we do that, as for example when fanatically following a religion, or even in politics. We allow ourselves to be molded to the convenience of others, and when we return, for example, from a war, we are called heroes, despite the fact that to become one it is necessary to hurt and kill.

Heroes from a single perspective.

Ballister has a hard time accepting that Nimona is a different being, and asks her a lot of questions all the time that the girl refuses to answer. He is careful to call her a monster, because it is something she hates, but it is what they have been taught in that kingdom, that everything different is, and that to be called heroes they have to destroy what is not the same as them, because they are afraid of the strange, and because they consider it a threat, even if they are harmless.

No nos explican bien esto, pero pienso que Nimona decide acercarse a Ballister porque cree que él podría entenderla, no solo ha sido condenado injustamente sin dejar que explicara nada, sino que por ser homosexual ha sufrido discriminación por parte de sus compañeros y esto lo dejan entrever en ciertos comentarios ofensivos que hacen.

Cuando ella le demuestra que es alguien inofensiva, es donde se cuestiona todo lo que hace la institución. Le cuesta adaptarse a ella, a los cambios, a lo nuevo. Pero se da cuenta de que no es algo imposible, y que forman una amistad única y verdadera, algo que no había tenido con alguien “normal”.

El enemigo, por supuesto, no espera de brazos cruzados que este par lo hunda, por lo que sigue sembrando cizaña y hace que las sospechas señalen a la joven, porque no es un monstruo cualquiera, sino que es el que se había enfrentado a Gloriana en el pasado, razón por la que construyeron los muros y formaron la institución.

Todos creen que está manipulando a Ballister y que él está aliado con ella para destruir el reino. Es algo absurdo y que él nota, porque ella no ha hecho nada para hacer daño, de hecho, en una ocasión salva a una niña, pero la pequeña, al ver que está en su forma de dragón, la apunta con una espada. Lo que nos da a entender que no importa qué tantas acciones buenas hagamos, somos duramente juzgados por una sola acción mala que realicemos, o incluso hasta por nuestra apariencia.

They don't explain this well, but I think Nimona decides to approach Ballister because she thinks he might understand her, not only has he been unjustly condemned without letting him explain anything, but because he is homosexual he has suffered discrimination from his peers and this is hinted at in certain offensive comments they make.

When she proves to him that she is harmless, he questions everything the institution does. He finds it hard to adapt to her, to the changes, to the new. But he realizes that it's not impossible, and that they form a unique and true friendship, something he hasn't had with someone "normal" before.

The enemy, of course, is not waiting idly for this pair to sink him, so he keeps sowing tares and makes suspicions point to the young woman, because he is not just any monster, but he is the one who had confronted Gloriana in the past, the reason why they built the walls and formed the institution.

Everyone believes that she is manipulating Ballister and that he is in league with her to destroy the kingdom. It is something absurd and something he notices, because she has done nothing to harm, in fact, on one occasion she saves a little girl, but the little girl, seeing that she is in her dragon form, points a sword at her. Which gives us to understand that no matter how many good deeds we do, we are harshly judged by a single bad deed we do, or even by our appearance.

Nimona vuelve a la guarida deprimida después de esto, y le dice una frase muy interesante a Ballister: “A los pequeños se les enseña que al ver a un monstruo deben matarlo para convertirse en héroes, ¿y en serio nosotros somos los monstruos?”. Esto me recuerda a lo que decía de la guerra, pero bueno, cada quien es libre de darle la interpretación que quiera a esta película, y lo bueno de ella es que pienso que podría adaptarse a muchas situaciones.

Finalmente Ballister y Nimona terminan peleando, y esta se siente traicionada y abandonada, una vez más. Acá nos muestran el pasado de esta chica, el cómo en realidad era amiga de Gloriana, y que esta termina rechazándola por un malentendido, principalmente porque los demás le dicen que debe alejarse de ella, aún cuando sabía que no era mala.

La tildaron de malvada tan solo por ser lo que ella era, y Gloriana, después de todo lo que habían construido, en vez de apoyarla, la apunta al pecho con una espada y la amenaza, de ahí sale la estatua que adorna el reino. Una que va a ser importante para lo que viene después.

Es increíble lo importante que es el apoyo aunque sea de una sola persona, que crea en ti y te acepte tal cual eres. Lo horrible que es sentir que esta te abandone y que la historia vuelva a repetirse con Ballister, cuando ella creía que esta vez iba a ser diferente.

Cansada de la misma situación, de ser acusada, juzgada, atacada sin razón, perseguida, y ahora, nuevamente sola, llega a su límite y se convierte en ese monstruo al que de verdad todos temen. Algo gigante, oscuro, que se lleva todo pensamiento racional y amenaza con estallar. Pero en realidad no busca atacar a los demás, sino a ella misma al ya no poder soportar más dolor. Al haber confiado en vano. Al empezar a creer que de verdad algo está mal con ella.

Nimona returns to the lair depressed after this, and says a very interesting phrase to Ballister: "The little ones are taught that when they see a monster they must kill it to become heroes, and we are the monsters? This reminds me of what I was saying about the war, but well, everyone is free to give the interpretation they want to this movie, and the good thing about it is that I think it could be adapted to many situations.

Finally Ballister and Nimona end up fighting, and Nimona feels betrayed and abandoned, once again. Here we are shown this girl's past, how she was actually friends with Gloriana, and that Gloriana ends up rejecting her because of a misunderstanding, mainly because the others tell her that she should stay away from her, even when she knew she was not bad.

They branded her as evil just for being what she was, and Gloriana, after all they had built, instead of supporting her, points a sword at her chest and threatens her, from there comes the statue that adorns the kingdom. One that will be important for what comes next.

It is incredible how important it is to have the support of even one person, who believes in you and accepts you as you are. How horrible it is to feel that this one abandons you and that history repeats itself again with Ballister, when she believed that this time it was going to be different.

Tired of the same situation, of being accused, judged, attacked for no reason, persecuted, and now, alone again, she reaches her limit and becomes that monster that everyone really fears. Something giant, dark, that takes away all rational thought and threatens to explode. But in reality it does not seek to attack others, but herself as she can no longer bear any more pain. Having trusted in vain. As she begins to believe that something is really wrong with her.

La idea del suicidio no es algo que se le haya cruzado por la mente esa única vez, porque en otra ocasión nos había dicho: “No sé qué me asusta más. El hecho de que todos en este reino quieran clavar una espada en mi corazón o que a veces quiero que lo hagan.”

Esto para mí fue bastante desgarrador. Te preguntas qué tanto ha sufrido una persona para considerar la idea del suicidio, para creer que este mundo estaría mejor sin ella, para ver esta alternativa como la única solución a sus problemas. Inevitablemente, cuando se dirige a la estatua de Gloriana para perforarse el corazón con la espada que esta sujeta, y dice esta frase, no pude evitar llorar.

Fue un momento emotivo, que te hace pensar, reflexionar y sentirte identificado si es que has pasado por una situación similar o alguien a quien conozcas. Es interesante cómo es la forma de Nimona en ese momento, porque me recuerda a pensamientos oscuros que he tenido, a depresión. Todo se siente así, oscuro, enmarañado, pesado. Lo llevan al plano físico.

Es en ese momento cuando Ballister le dice: te veo. Ya no estás sola. Y se disculpa. Y es que realmente eso, a veces, hace la diferencia. Se nota que Nimona quiere vivir, pero que es atacada por pensamientos oscuros y que no hay nadie que le haya prestado su ayuda para salir de ahí.

La diferencia que hace que alguien te diga no estás sola, y te demuestre que es así, que te tienda la mano en tu peor momento y que crea en ti. Que te acepte tal cual eres, aun si eso significa derrumbar creencias que ha construido, y al que tu vida le parezca valiosa, porque eres única, irrepetible y una buena amiga. Que lo que se crea de ti, o lo rara que seas no hace que deje de ver lo buena persona que eres.

The thought of suicide is not something that crossed his mind that one time, because on another occasion he had told us, "I don't know what scares me more. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to stick a sword in my heart or that sometimes I want them to."

This for me was quite heartbreaking. You wonder how much a person has suffered to consider the idea of suicide, to believe that this world would be better off without her, to see this alternative as the only solution to her problems. Inevitably, when he goes to the statue of Gloriana to pierce his heart with the sword it holds, and says this sentence, I couldn't help but cry.

It was an emotional moment, which makes you think, reflect and feel identified if you have gone through a similar situation or someone you know. It's interesting how Nimona's form is in that moment, because it reminds me of dark thoughts I've had, of depression. Everything feels like that, dark, tangled, heavy. They bring it to the physical plane.

It is at that moment that Ballister says to him: I see you. You are no longer alone. And he apologizes. And it really does make a difference sometimes. You can tell that Nimona wants to live, but that she is attacked by dark thoughts and that there is no one who has lent her his help to get out of there.

The difference it makes when someone tells you that you are not alone, and shows you that it is so, when they reach out to you at your worst moment and believe in you. Who accepts you as you are, even if that means overthrowing beliefs he has built, and to whom your life seems valuable, because you are unique, unrepeatable and a good friend. That what he believes about you, or how rare you are does not make him stop seeing what a good person you are.

Para añadirle más leña al fuego los cañones que apuntan a Nimona se activan, pese a que eso significa sacrificar a una parte de la población. Es en este momento donde los demás caballeros se dan cuenta que todo lo que hacían se suponía era para proteger la vida de las personas, y que ahora, en un fanatismo ciego, y sin razón, tienen que hacer todo lo contrario, dañar a su misma gente. Otra vez motivándonos a cuestionar todo.

Al terminar la película mi hermano me dijo que no explicaron de dónde salió Nimona, cómo llegó a conocer a Ballister, dónde había estado, ni por qué había aparecido ahora. En fin, un montón de preguntas. Y sí, de hecho la historia no es perfecta, capaz le hizo falta explicar un poco más de dónde sale cada cosa, y mira que me gustan las explicaciones, pero no sentí que hiciera falta.

Primero, porque es para un público infantil que no siempre está buscando razones sino diversión, y segundo porque más que darnos un panorama completo de dónde emerge cada situación, resuelven con los datos que ya tienen, es más bien una historia para retratar ciertos conflictos que vivimos como personas diferentes en el día a día.

Utilizaron esta historia de ciencia ficción fantástica y a estos personajes para dejarnos llevar y a la vez para que reflexionemos, así que en este sentido me gustó mucho lo que quisieron transmitir. No importa si las personas empiezan a creer que es una propaganda para lavarnos el cerebro, pues más bien creo que busca despertar empatía y entendimiento hacia lo que creemos diferente. También, dar voz a los que ya se sienten así.

Para mí, vale la pena pasearse por esta película. No llega a durar dos horas, pero en este poco tiempo logra ser divertida y profunda. Creo que sería bueno echarle un ojo a la historieta, porque capaz allí se consiga una versión más completa de la historia.

To add fuel to the fire the cannons aimed at Nimona are activated, even though it means sacrificing part of the population. It is at this moment where the other knights realize that everything they were doing was supposed to protect people's lives, and now, in a blind fanaticism, and for no reason, they have to do the opposite, harming their own people. Again motivating us to question everything.

At the end of the movie my brother told me that they didn't explain where Nimona came from, how she got to know Ballister, where she had been, or why she had appeared now. In short, a lot of questions. And yes, in fact the story is not perfect, maybe it needed to explain a little more where everything comes from, and I like explanations, but I didn't feel it was necessary.

First, because it is for a child audience that is not always looking for reasons but for fun, and second, because rather than giving us a complete picture of where each situation emerges, they solve with the data they already have, it is rather a story to portray certain conflicts that we live as different people on a daily basis.

They used this fantastic science fiction story and these characters to get us carried away and at the same time to make us reflect, so in this sense I really liked what they wanted to convey. It doesn't matter if people start to believe that it is a propaganda to brainwash us, because I think it seeks to awaken empathy and understanding towards what we think is different. Also, to give a voice to those who already feel that way.

For me, this movie is worth the walk through. It's not even two hours long, but in this short time it manages to be funny and deep. I think it would be good to take a look at the comic book, because you might get a more complete version of the story there.
