Venezuela, año 1953. Tiempo en que se desarrolla la historia.
En lejanas tierras de un campo llamado Madera vive en una modesta casa Jacinta Tovar una niña de 5 años de edad con su padre Joaquín Tovar y su madre Josefina de Tovar, son la típica familia de campo que cultiva la tierra en el patio trasero de su casa que a su vez sirve de sustento para toda la familia.

Joaquín y Josefina han procreado muchos hijos e hijas, todos con muy poca diferencia de edad entre unos y otros. La niña Jacinta se une a sus hermanos y todos los niños juegan descalzos y alegres en el exterior de la casa los juegos propios de la época, juegos como el trompo, las metras y papagayos también a las muñecas, el canto y los bailes como el Alé limón el puente se ha caído
En el pueblo más cercano viven los Villarreal Rodríguez, es una familia de clase media y de economía bastante buena para aquellos años. Los Villarreal Rodríguez tenían solo una pequeña hija a quien bautizaron con el nombre de Nina, una encantadora chiquilla de cabellos dorados, piel blanca y ojos miel de 5 años de edad, el parto de la Señora de Villarreal no había sido bueno, sufrío algunos inconvemientes que la llevaron a tomar la decisión de no engendrar hijos nuevamente.
Pensando en la soledad con la que Nina se estaba criando la Señora Villarreal resolvió buscar entre los habitantes de los campos cercanos a una niña que le hiciera compañía durante el crecimiento a Nina, el objetivo de esta niña sería ser una especie de dama de compañía para compartir los juegos y así Nina no se sintiera sola.
Una tarde la Señora Villarreal sube a su auto y maneja hasta el campo Madera, una vez ahí observa las diferentes casas y a sus habitantes, se detiene frente a la casa donde visualiza a muchos niños jugando felices en el patio.
Toca ¡toc toc! a la puerta de la casa y sale Josefina (madre de Jacinta), buenas tardes soy la Señora Villarreal vivo en el pueblo próximo, he venido hasta aquí en busca de una niña para llevarla a mi casa y se críe junto a mi hija Nina.
Josefina la invita a pasar adelante y le dice espere aquí mientras hablo con Joaquín, después de un breve momento Josefina y Joaquín regresan a la sala donde aguardaba la Señora Villarreal. ¿Y bien, qué han decidido?. Nosotros tenemos muchos hijos todos casi de la misma edad, venga y escoga a cuál se quiere llevar.
La sonrisa en el rostro de la Señora Villarreal no se hizo esperar, de inmediato pasó al patio y luego de observar y preguntar las edades de las niñas escogió a Jacinta sin vacilar; ¿por qué a Jacinta? porque tenía similar parecido a Nina.
Sin perder el tiempo Josefina prepara en una bolsa algunas pocas pertenencias de Jacinta, la abraza y la suben al auto. Por su parte la Señora Villarreal se compromete a traer a Jacinta de vez en cuando y deja abierta la invitación para que la visiten en su nueva casa cuando quieran.
Satisfecha por su logro la Señora Villarreal prepara ropa y zapatos para vestir a Jacinta luego de darle un merecido baño la niña parece otra, ahora está perfectamente atavíada, peinada y perfumada igual que su hija Nina.
Nina se sintió un poco celosa veía a Jacinta como a una intrusa con la que compartía la atención de su madre que antes era solo para ella. La tarea de enseñar a Nina que Jacinta es ahora su compañera de vida y de juego durante su crecimiento al principio no fué fácil.
La adaptación y aceptación de Nina y de Jacinta se da poco a poco cada día las niñas se compenetran durante las horas de juego y así van creciendo juntas en una relación de amigas y hermanas.
Llega el tiempo de ir a la escuela por primera vez y ambas niñas (Nina y Jacinta) van a la misma escuela, al mismo grado de estudio y con la misma maestra, la Señora Villarreal se ocupa en persona de llevarlas a la escuela y traerlas de regreso a casa cada día de la semana. Así transcurre la vida y las niñas poco a poco crecen y se convierten en mujeres.
Cursando el último año de bachillerato Jacinta se cruza en los pasillos con un apuesto joven que estudia en otra sección del liceo, por primera vez siente que algo extraño le ocurre en su estómago cada vez que lo ve o se apróxima a él, es una sensación que no sabe explicar no es un dolor de estómago claro está.

No sabe que hacer cuando ve al chico, se pone nerviosa sus manos le tiemblan, su lengua se traba sin poder articular palabras sufriendo pena por sus sentimientos.
No conoce su nombre y se anima a preguntar a una de sus compañeras de clase que al parecer si lo conoce y trata. El es Gerardo Gutiérrez dice su compañera, es el hijo de un reconocido abogado del pueblo y vive en las afueras de la población.
El encuentro entre Jacinta y Gerardo se produce durante los juegos intercursos internos del liceo, en la cancha de Voleibol se enfrentan para disputarse la victoria del partido, para controlar los nervios Jacinta transforma sus emociones en energía que imprime al golpear el balón de Voleibol logrando así estabilizarse ante la presencia de Gerardo con quien está disputando el partido.
Las cosas salen bien, Jacinta se destaca al hacer sus mejores saques para dar inicio a la ronda de juego, lo que a su vez atrae la atención de Gerardo sobre ella. El equipo de las chicas gana el muy aguerrido juego y al finalizar Gerardo la busca para felicitarla, pero en realidad es una excusa para acercarse a Jacinta que ha tocado poderosamente su interés.
Después de aquel partido de Voleibol se produce el acercamiento personal imprevisto entre Gerardo y Jacinta, no eran novios solo dos personas que se atraían. Luego de unos meses nota sus continuas faltas en la llegada de la costumbre femenina (la marea roja) sus nervios afloran de nuevo, esta vez de un modo distinto ya no son las extañas sensaciones en el estómago sino un temblor de miedo ante la posibilidad de lo que sospecha, un embarazo precóz.
Enfrentar las consecuencias de aquel encuentro fortuito y encarar a la Señora Villarreal era algo que le ponía la piel de gallina, había traicionado la confianza de su protectora que la había criado y cuidado con igual esmero como a su propia hija.
La noticia llega al conocimiento de la Señora Villarreal que se siente ofendida con el comportamiento de Jacinta, la traición no queda sin castigo la envía a vivir lejos de su lado en casa de una familia que se ofrece recibirla para evitar el escándalo y los chismes en el pueblo.
La familia Rodríguez Salvatierra recibe a Jacinta y dispone de un sitio para su habitación dentro de la casa junto al resto de la familia, la Señora Rodríguez es hermana de la Señora Villarreal y es quien se encarga de la vida de Jacinta de ahora en adelante.
La primera visita al ginecólogo es planeada por la Señora Rodríguez, luego de darle instrucciones a Jacinta de cómo debe preparase para acudir a la cita médica, la revisión médica demuestra que todo marcha bien con el desarrollo del embarzo y la criatura está en perfecto crecimiento.
La Señora Rodríguez compra batas maternas para Jacinta y trata en lo posible que ella se sienta cómoda en medio de la familia y de su situación. Gestiona lo necesario para que termine sus estudios de bachillerato en la escuela nocturna (sistema de educación para adultos) pues en aquella época en su condición no es permitido asistir a la escuela regular porque se considera un mal ejemplo para los demás.
Cerca de la casa de la Familia Rodríguez había una pequeña pero muy bien surtida bodega de expendio de alimentos no perecederos y hasta algunos materiales de ferretería, este establecimiento era atendido por su propio dueño, un joven un poco mayor en edad, Leandro Montalbán soltero y bien parecido que vivía a un lado con su madre y tía.
Las veces que hacía falta algún producto para la preparación de los alimentos como harina de maíz o salsa de tomate para los espaguetis, Jacinta se ofrecía a ir a la bodega a comprarlos y la Señora Rodríguez que no se apercibía de los reales motivos de Jacinta para ir a la bodega la dejaba ir pues ella pensaba que lo hacía para distraerse de tanto tiempo que pasaba en casa.
En el momento en que la Señora Rodríguez cae en cuenta de las intenciones de Jacinta por sus visitas a la bodega, le dice: Querida Jacinta esto que te voy a decir es solo mi pensamiento pero quiero que lo tomes en cuenta para que no sufras una nueva desilusión. Pienso que en tu condición nigun hombre en su sano juicio se atreverá a tomar la responsabilidad que conllevas, has tropezado en la vida pero quizás la misma vida tenga para ti preparado algo mejor mucho más adelante.
Los meses transcurren rápidamente para todos en la familia pero no era así la percepción de Jacinta, para ella los meses se habían detenido pausando las horas y los días. Finalmente llega el día del tan esperado alumbramiento, la salida al hospital fue de carrera como es normal, nace el hijo de Jacinta un vigoroso varón que pone por nombre Julio.
De regreso a casa con su hijo Julio en brazos es recibida con alegría por la familia Rodríguez, los primeros meses de vida de Julio transcurren entre los pañales sucios y la tarea de preparar el tetero a su hora para alimentarlo cada 3 horas.
Jacinta está en la labor de aprender a ser madre, de cuidar a su hijo y hacerse responsable, termina sus estudios en la escuela nocturna, continúa visitando la bodega y al cabo de un año el tropezón de la vida la sorprende cuando Leandro visita a la Señora Rodríguez para pedir en matrimonio la mano de Jacinta.

Satisfied by her achievement, Mrs. Villarreal prepares clothes and shoes to dress Jacinta after giving her a well-deserved bath, the girl looks like another, now she is perfectly dressed, combed and perfumed just like her daughter Nina hers.
Nina felt a little jealous of her, she saw Jacinta as an intruder with whom she shared the attention of her mother that before was only for her. The task of teaching Nina that Jacinta is now her life partner and her playmate during her growth was not easy at first.
The adaptation and acceptance of Nina and Jacinta occurs little by little each day the girls interpenetrate during the hours of play and thus they grow together in a relationship of friends and sisters.
The time comes to go to school for the first time and both girls (Nina and Jacinta) go to the same school, at the same degree of study and with the same teacher, Mrs. Villarreal takes care of taking them to school and bringing them in person. back home every weekday. While in her last year of high school, Jacinta comes across a handsome young man who studies in another section of the high school in the corridors, for the first time she feels that something strange is happening to her stomach every time she sees him or approaches him, it is a sensation that he does not know how to explain is not a stomach ache of course.
