The invention of clothing and the development of the tools necessary to create it are milestones in human history, however, since it is unlikely that the furs and other organic materials used to make clothing will be preserved in the archaeological record, still very little is known about the origin of the clothes.

Now a new study from Arizona State University details more than 60 tools made from bone and a tool made from the tooth of a cetacean that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises, which are indirect evidence of the oldest clothing in the archaeological record. Finds first unearthed in the Contrebandoers cave in Morocco in 2011 show cut marks on the bones of carnivores suggesting that instead of processing them for meat they used it to obtain skins.

Scientists hypothesize that about 120,000 years ago Homo sapiens began to intensify the use of bone to make formal tools and use them for specific tasks including leather and skin work.
