Restyling of the cover of the book "Flatlandia" - Restyling copertina del libro "Flatlandia"

Hello everyone and thanks for being here on my blog!

Today I share with you a simple restyling of a book cover made in Adobe Illustrator.

In particular, for this exercise I chose the book "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions", a very interesting science fiction novel that I recently recommended to young students I am helping with their study. It is a book written in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott.

The plot of this book is quite simple: it talks about the life of an inhabitant of a hypothetical two-dimensional universe (Flatland) who comes into contact with the inhabitant of a three-dimensional universe (Spacelandia).

It is a very fluent book to read and it deals with very original themes such as mathematics intertwined with sociology, all with a pinch of irony and criticism.

The main target is adolescent guys. For this reason, I thought of making a younger, more colorful and dynamic cover, which would reflect what I felt while reading this novel.
The current cover proposed by the publishing house is as follows:

The subject of the book cover is a geometric world that I found on this free use image site. Since the image was in PNG format, I proceeded to trace it in vector with the pen tool.

The two fonts I used are free and can be found on the “Dafont” website. If you like them, you can download them from these links:

The last thing to do was add a starry background:

This is one of my favorite quotes from the book:
Look at that wretched creature. That Point is a Being like us, but confined to the dimensionless abyss. He himself is the whole World of him, the whole Universe of him; he cannot conceive other than himself: he knows neither length, nor width, nor height, since he has no experience of it; he doesn't even know the number Two; nor does he have an idea of plurality, since he is in himself his One and the All of him, being in reality Nothing. Yet he notices his total satisfaction with him, and draws this lesson: that being self-satisfied means being cowardly and ignorant, and that it is better to aspire to something than to be blindly, and helplessly, happy".

Osserva quella miserabile creatura.
