I Discovered Another Something I Am Not Perfect At?

IMG_9565 (2).JPG

Do You Remember When I Said I Was Not Perfect? ..

Well I should have remembered that I said that and used my better judgement. But I'm a man and I can do it all! A Jack of all trades and a master of none. Working with glass now falls to the very bottom of the "Master Of None" list. I suck at glass repair! There I said it.. Now maybe it will sink in.

I have to say.. I am pretty handy and feel as though I know enough about the projects I tackle around the house. I can build things, with little worry that they will fall to the ground. I can repair/run light electrical, without the fear of shock, fire or death. I can work my way around engines and mechanical things, without the fear of flying parts, cursing or dismemberment of any kind.

SO WHY DO I HAVE SO MUCH TROUBLE WITH GLASS???!!!

I Just Don't Know.. Why I have this huge learning curve and bad luck streak when it comes to working with or around glass. I can only remember one time I purchased a single pane of precut glass and installed it into a old door, with no problems. That's it! Every other project that included me touching, cutting, installing, removing .. so on and so on .. glass, ended in disaster.

This Time It Will Be Different! ..

Yup, NOPE. It DID NOT end differently. It ended in disaster, but also with limited injury.. thank goodness.

The Project.. was to fix the shower door in one of our bathrooms. It had been catching at the bottom for some time and I was sick and tired of it. The plan was to remove the bottom drip plate, clean the plate and the glass, readjust what needed readjustment and put it back in place.

What Really Happened.. I did all of the above, and thought to myself, "Self.. You can make this better!" My idea of making things better just didn't work out. My bad luck when working with glass continues. I won't bore you with all of the details, but it did involve running to the local hardware store for a glass drill bit. Just a tiny hole is all I needed to make it better. One small hole, carefully drilled into tempered glass. MISTAKE!!!

GLASS EVERYWHERE!!!

And I mean everywhere! Stuck in the wall, in the toilet, in the tub, in the sinks, all over the floor, into the bedroom, in one of Molly's water bowls, on the "Pepper Bed", in my hair, in the pockets of my pants, and even a few small shards stuck in my hands. What a mess.

My wife came up in a fury of panic, and Molly ran for the hills as the horrific sound echoed through the house. She dropped off a vacuum and left me to stew and pout in my own mess. It couldn't have been because I was short with her and mumbling "Stuff".. You know.. "Stuff".

These Tiny Cuts.. On my hands, accounted for all of the bodily harm. I was lucky. Now my ego on the other hand was slapped around a little, bruised and tormented. My wallet will surely feel a little pain as well. I don't expect this to be a cheap fix.

I had a guy come out to quote me a new door and a new shower surround, but like most contractors, I am still waiting on it. I don't understand how it is people don't like making money? I may never figure it out.

I busted out the majority of what remained (above). Then taped up what was left (below). I didn't want to force the sharp shards out in fear I would cut myself bad. "Leave it to the experts!" Is way I usually say.. HAHAHAHAhahahahah.. I know. Don't say it.

I put aside the usable hardware.. in case the glass can be reasonably replaced. If I ever get that quote back that is. It took forever (several hours) but I was able to get all of the glass shards cleaned up. I washed floors and surfaced about 10 times. I washed dog beds, towels and water bowls. It's almost like it never happened! (wink wink) hehe.

I Did However Create Something Out Of All This Destruction ..

An artistic picture. It reminds me of the color of my face when this all went down.
For what it's worth, I kind of like it. (smirk)

“Sometimes you think you've found love, when it's really just one of those objects that are shiny in a certain light--a trophy, say, or a ring, or a diamond, even. Glass shards, maybe. You've got to be careful, you do. The shine can blind you. The edges can cut you in way you never imagined. It is up to you to allow that or not.”

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
