Torture - Raising to the cross - oil, ink and spray on canvas

The penalty of crucifixion was a practice used in ancient times by the Assyrians, Persians, Indians and Shiites, it was brought to the West by Alexander the Great.

The people who most used this terrible punishment technique were the Romans. To ruthlessly punish the rebellion of the slave Spartacus, the emperor Crassus ordered the largest mass crucifixion. All 6,000 prisoners of the revolt led by Spartacus were crucified along the regina viarum, the famous Via Appia for 190 kilometers, from Rome, Lazio to Capua, Campania.

Historical sources tell that a cross was erected every 30 meters and historians assume that Spartacus, the Thracian slave, not recognized by the Roman soldiers, was also crucified. The great director Stanley Kubrickwill also dedicate a film to the famous rebel slave.Spartacus

The Romans also used the crucifixion to punish men of different religions and in particular the first Christians, this happened up to the Edict of Milan or also called the Edict of Constantine which allowed freedom of worship in 313 AD.

The crucifixion theme has fascinated many artists in the history of art, and the same has been for myself.

Peter Paul Rubens - Raising to the cross - triptych / altarpiece - 1610

To create this large-format work, I was inspired by Peter Paul Rubens and Luca Giordano, two great painters of the Baroque period, around the 17th century.

I made a group of people who lift a man to raise him to the martyrdom of the cross. The technique I used is ink, oil and spray on canvas which measures 150x100 cm. a very large work that is owned by me and that I have placed in the bedroom.

The human figure from behind in the foreground is outside the scene, and involves us to enter as spectators in front of a film. A film premiere that disturbs us like many images we see every day on our phones or televisions.

I hope you liked my article and the painting and very soon I will delve into this dramatic theme.

A hug without a cross.

Tortura
