RE: Math mini-contest problem for Day 11 on D.Buzz 😎

Answer for Day 11 Math Problem 😎

There are 15 riders in the horse race. 🎯

A horse has 1 head and 4 feet, while a human has 1 head and 2 feet.

Solution

The problem is under systems of linear equations in (elementary) algebra.

Let c = horses with riders
Let h = horses without riders

Equation 1 (referring to feet): 6c + 4h = 170
Equation 2 (referring to heads): 2c + h = 50

(Equation 3) = (Equation 1) - 3 * (Equation 2)
h = 20

(Equation 4) = (Equation 2) * 4 - (Equation 1)
2c = 30
c = 15

According to Equation 4, there are 15 riders riding horses. Therefore, there are 15 humans paired with horses. The original problem says that horses without riders are not counted.
