Observa – Piensa – Escribe // Observe – Think – Write
Jamás me pasaría por la cabeza la situación de escribir (en plena víspera de Navidad) acerca de los Phoenicopterus, que popularmente se conocen como Flamencos. Tal vez es más aceptable hablar en época navideña de un elegante Pavo con mucho brío, de una hermosa Gallina bien gordita, o de un jugoso y tierno Lechón.
It would never cross my mind to write (in the middle of Christmas Eve) about the Phoenicopterus, popularly known as Flamingos. Perhaps it is more acceptable to talk at Christmas time about an elegant turkey with a lot of verve, a beautiful plump hen, or a juicy and tender suckling pig, but it is also more acceptable to talk about the flamingos.
El Flamenco, es una enorme ave que supera el metro de altura, vive en lugares muy húmedos (agua de las marismas); así, entonces, se puede decir que es un ave acuática. Su aspecto es muy peculiar, posee un hermoso plumaje de color rosa, el cual se origina debido a la ingesta de microcrustáceos, poseedores de pigmentos carotenos, que le dan su color característico. Los polluelos alcanzan dicho color a partir de los 3 años (aproximadamente). Para comer, hunden en el agua toda su cabeza y parte del largo cuello, escavan con el pico, filtrando el agua y dejando dentro su comida: diminutos camarones y coloridas algas que son su dieta habitual. La “comunicación” entre ellos resulta ser divertida para quienes les observan: mueven la cabeza y su largo cuello de forma articulada, en varias direcciones, con ciertos espacios de pausa, como si fuesen robots mecánicos. Ambos, al anidar, cuidan de sus huevos y los incuban durante 2 meses, sobre el nido (un montículo de barro y lodo con un hoyo en medio). Se agrupan en enormes colonias y pasan el día alimentándose, se bañan y se acicalan. Realizan un magestuoso vuelo y duermen o descansan en una sola pata.
The Flamingo, is a huge bird that exceeds one meter in height, lives in very humid places (water of the marshes); thus, then, it can be said that it is an aquatic bird. Its appearance is very peculiar, it has a beautiful pink plumage, which originates due to the ingestion of microcrustaceans, possessing carotene pigments, which give it its characteristic color. The chicks reach this color when they are about 3 years old. To eat, they sink their whole head and part of their long neck into the water, digging with their beak, filtering the water and leaving their food inside: tiny shrimps and colorful algae, which are their usual diet. The "communication" between them turns out to be amusing for those who observe them: they move their heads and their long necks articulately, in various directions, with certain pauses, as if they were mechanical robots. Both, when nesting, take care of their eggs and incubate them for 2 months, on the nest (a mound of mud and mud with a hole in the middle). They group together in huge colonies and spend the day feeding, bathing and grooming. They make a majestic flight and sleep or rest on a single leg.
En verdad, no sé si son aves comestibles, pero cuando el ser humano tiene hambre, ni le importa que la hallaca sea de Flamenco. Y si @lanzjoseg les ofrece de cenar en su casa, una deliciosa ensalada de Gallina, antes de comer revisen las plumas si son blancas o rosadas.
In truth, I don't know if they are edible birds, but when human beings are hungry, they don't even care if the hallaca is made of Flamenco. And if @lanzjoseg offers you a delicious chicken salad for dinner at his house, before eating, check the feathers to see if they are white or pink.
