☀️ Salud en Crisis.

Observo la imagen que nos presenta para esta semana el Concurso Observa Piensa Escribe y me vienen de inmediato los siguientes pensamientos sobre mi experiencia personal en un centro de salud en mi país. Puede que sea interesante leer a los amigos @alicia2022 y @getheenspring, a quienes invito cordialmente a participar.

La única vez que estuve recluido en algún centro hospitalario fue cuando estaba por cumplir los doce años de edad. Fue un momento difícil y complicado en mi vida, la cual estuvo a punto de terminar de no haber sido porque mis padres me llevaron a la emergencia un sábado en la noche y no el lunes, como en principio habían decidido. La opinión de los médicos fue que, de haber esperado hasta el lunes, quizás hubiera muerto en mi casa antes.

Aunque fue difícil además por mi aversión a las inyecciones para esa época, debo concluir que en ese momento y a pesar de mi corta edad, sin duda, recibí la mejor atención médica y asistencial en un hospital. La dedicación, cariño, profesionalismo y calidad humana de todos los que en esos más de treinta días que estuve hospitalizado, es algo que nunca he olvidado.

Incluso fue hasta divertido, porque recuerdo que en ciertas ocasiones que estábamos ya bastante recuperados (me refiero a otros niños que también estuvieron allí conmigo) se nos permitía hasta jugar con las sillas de ruedas como si fueran carros de carrera. También, como se nos entablillaban los brazos para mantener en su sitio las agujas por donde se nos suministraban las medicinas de los tratamientos, particularmente a mí, se me permitía recibir estos tratamientos solo en las manos, ya que no me gustaba que me tomaran la vía en el antebrazo. Hasta ese punto llegaba la atención tan humana de estos médicos y enfermeras.

Muy distinto es una situación similar en estos tiempos. En el caso de mis tres hijos, los mismos han sido muy sanos y nunca han tenido que ser hospitalizados por alguna complicación médica. Pero conociendo casos de familiares y amigos cercanos, el tema de la salud y los centros hospitalarios en este nuevo siglo, es toda una tragedia.

En particular, me consta la falta de sensibilización por parte de mucho del personal que se dedica al área de la salud en los hospitales públicos. Lo digo por experiencia, cuando he conocido personas que trabajan en estas instituciones y son capaces de hacerse de las medicinas que entregan en dotación y luego las revenden a los pacientes que las necesitan con urgencia.

Trabajé con personas (en el área de recursos humanos) que a veces me decían que los demás "no son familia nuestra" a la hora de atender alguna inquietud, queja o duda en cuanto a los asuntos laborales y por eso, no mostraban mucho interés en ayudarlos. Estoy seguro de que es un pensamiento muy recurrente en el personal que labora en los centros de salud de mi país. Aunque también existen aquellos que nunca han perdido esa calidad humana de servicio y excelencia profesional, pero siento que cada vez son menos.

El tema de los centros de salud en mi país es muy complejo y pasa por una reestructuración general de nuestra sociedad, desde el gobierno central hasta el último empleado de cualquier ente público, incluidos los mismos ciudadanos, que necesitan hacerse más responsables de lo que nos depara el futuro. Pienso que ha llegado el momento en que, o se impone la conciencia general y avanzamos por el camino del bien, o terminaremos convirtiendo este mundo en una especie de parodia al estilo Mad Max. Y ojalá me equivoque.

☀️ Health in Crisis.

My entry to the TopFiveFamily Contest Watch Think Write.

I look at the image presented to us this week by the [Observe Think Write Contest] (@topfivefamily/announcing-winners-of-the-contest-observe-17c41b7b3a121) and the following thoughts immediately come to me about my personal experience in a health center in my country. It might be interesting to read friends @osomar357 and @jazmins, whom I cordially invite to participate.

The only time I was confined to a hospital was when I was about to turn twelve years old. It was a difficult and complicated moment in my life, which was about to end had it not been for the fact that my parents took me to the emergency room on a Saturday night and not on Monday, as they had originally decided. The doctors' opinion was that, if I had waited until Monday, I might have died at home earlier.

Although it was also difficult because of my aversion to injections at that time, I must conclude that at that moment and in spite of my young age, I undoubtedly received the best medical care and assistance in a hospital. The dedication, affection, professionalism and human quality of all those who took care of me during those more than thirty days I was hospitalized, is something I have never forgotten.

It was even fun, because I remember that on certain occasions when we were already quite recovered (I am referring to other children who were also there with me) we were even allowed to play with the wheelchairs as if they were racing carts. Also, as our arms were splinted to keep in place the needles through which we were given the medicines for the treatments, particularly me, I was allowed to receive these treatments only in my hands, since I did not like to have the IV taken in my forearm. That was the extent of the humane care of these doctors and nurses.

A similar situation is very different these days. In the case of my three children, they have been very healthy and have never had to be hospitalized for any medical complication. But knowing cases of relatives and close friends, the issue of health and hospital centers in this new century is a tragedy.

In particular, I am aware of the lack of sensitization on the part of many of the personnel dedicated to the health area in public hospitals. I say this from experience, when I have met people who work in these institutions and are able to get hold of the medicines that are delivered in endowment and then resell them to patients who urgently need them.

I worked with people (in the human resources area) who sometimes told me that the others "are not our family " when it came to dealing with any concern, complaint or doubt regarding labor issues and therefore, they did not show much interest in helping them. I am sure that this is a very recurrent thought in the personnel working in the health centers of my country. Although there are also those who have never lost that human quality of service and professional excellence, but I feel that there are fewer and fewer of them.

The issue of health centers in my country is very complex and requires a general restructuring of our society, from the central government to the last employee of any public entity, including the citizens themselves, who need to become more responsible for what the future holds. I think the time has come when either the general conscience takes over and we move forward on the path of good, or we will end up turning this world into some kind of Mad Max-style parody. And I hope I'm wrong.
