I will talk about how it all went down. First let's talk about Sami and Gunther's storyline leading to Wrestlemania 40 this Saturday.
When I saw how they embraced Rocky III fully in the Chad Gable/Sami Zayn storyline, I was really excited. It felt like they were channelling something timeless and legendary.
That struck a chord when Sami acknowledged that he had felt scared during their workout session. I found it to be so raw and honest, just like the time Rocky reveals his own fear in the film.
In this context, the training montage was such a nostalgic throwback to Rocky III and it worked so well. Watching them trying to find that hunger and drive as they pushed themselves to their limits again was simply amazing.
And when Chad reminded Sami of his past successes at WrestleMania, it added another layer to the story, showing how important it is for Sami to find his "eye of the tiger" again.
The Sami and Bronson Reed match appeared as if it was the story’s climax but ended being a setup for more. It was like a gut punch when GUNTHER attacked Chad, reminiscent of the time when Apollo Creed’s trainer got hurt in Rocky.
Instead of paying attention to the match, Sami instantly rushed to help his friend, indicating where his priorities were.
Sami had just started gaining moment in the ring when GUNTHER went after him; I sat on my toes throughout this moment.
Trying to shatter the hero’s morale at their prime is one of the oldest moves that villains pull off. Nonetheless, against all odds Sami proved otherwise by simply refusing to lie down on the mat even though he was beaten and battered.
This was an unforgettable scene that helped deliver on themes such as perseverance and determination.
In general, I feel this storyline brings together old memories and new things in a perfect way. This storyline pays homage to Rocky III while also appearing new and exciting;
I cannot wait for WrestleMania this Saturday!
