Leaving for the Big City

Sara packed her bags, placing them at the front door of her soon-to-be old home. Her grandmother approached her; her arms wide open.

“Do you have to leave?” asked her grandmother, smothering Sara in her embrace.

“Yes, grandma.” Sara peeled herself out of her grandmother’s clutches, trying to piece together a smile through quivering cheeks and lips.

“Did you pack all of the food I made for you? And that map and pamphlet about the guilds in Caleah? It's important to stay informed!”

“It’s all there.” Sara turned away, looking at the door as tears flooded her eyes.

“Aww baby, come back here.” Her grandmother ushered her back into her arms, and Sara let her emotions flood out.

“I’m going to miss you so much,” Sara blubbed on her grandmother’s shoulders. “I’ll come back every weekend.”

“I know you will, lovely,” replied her grandmother, stroking Sara’s hair. Her own eyes began to become moist with tears.

A short while later, Sara eased up her hug, and the pair slowly uncoupled from one another. “I guess I should be going now. I’m just going to be down the road in the city. Thirty minutes away.” She tried to reassure herself as much as her grandmother.

“Go on then, Sara. You’ve made me and your mother so proud,” her grandmother wiped the tears from her own eyes.

Sara smiled, “Bye, grandma. Love you.” She pressed open the door, stepping out into the familiarly unfamiliar world of opportunity.
