The Marauders (World Building Notes)

There was a prompt released in the world-building community about pirates, and I thought this would be a bit of fun to write something for.

Here's A Link To The Post If You'd Like To Check It Out.

The Marauders

The Marauders are an alien race whose world was utterly destroyed during the occupation, and they essentially took to space in a large marauding fleet/ convey.

They occupy a region of the galaxy where nobody threads lightly, it is filled with asteroids and debris left over from their destroyed planet. While the fields of space junk don't pose much of a threat - if left alone - due to the sheer amount of space between each rock, piece of machinery, or destroyed ship. Navigating this particular field would be relatively easy, but The Marauders have produced and placed gravity wells throughout the zone, which, when activated will cluster the debris together rapidly, to evade anyone who pursues them or to batter passing cruisers to decommission them.

Using this technology, they're able to stay completely safe within their region, and due to their reclusive and untrusting attitude to outsiders, nobody is completely sure what this region is like.

Some assume they may have bases or even space stations in their zone, but most believe that they only occupy spacecraft.

Criminal Activity

This species tends to use hit-and-run tactics to invade and raid small outposts, especially ones which are on the outskirts of solar systems, and away from any kind of aid or re-enforcements.

Marauders tend to primarily target Confederation fleets and bases, but they're not above attack within Free Space territory, especially if they're desperate for particular resources.

Confederation territory - since the attacks - has seen massive amounts of money poured into defender patrols, who guard their territory and due to their trigger-happy attitude these patrols have fired upon civilian ships, trade haulers, and even their own military.

When on the fringe of "civilised space" recruits can get scared, this coupled with general miscommunications has caused many intergalactic incidents.

Jump Lane Jaka

JLJ is a particularly dreaded band of raiders of this faction, and they are commanded by a nasty character known as Razara-jaka, who is one of the most wanted members of the Marauders and has evaded numerous bounty hunters.

He was once captured but managed to charm one of the guards into letting him leave his cell while being transported. He and some of the crew ended up drinking together, and while nobody was looking he launched a signal from their ship. As they continued to party, they were being tracked by his crew, who were waiting for them while they dropped out of their jump lane.

His exploits are considered a myth that only the deep spacers know to be true, and these people tend to tell tall tales about what they've seen or heard out there. They share stories at local dock bars, and for anyone who wants to hear tales, they're expected to provide the drinks for the night.

Some of them even say they have - or know someone who has - seen this character, but many doubt his existence.
