Every January 14, the largest and most important mass event in the country takes place in my city, and it is considered, within Catholicism, the third largest congregation of people in the world, only behind those corresponding to the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico, and the Virgin of Fatima in Portugal.
Although Venezuela is a secular state, and our constitution enshrines freedom of worship, the truth is that the majority of the population practices Catholicism, mainly because it was the religion imposed by the Spanish Empire during its 300 years of presence in Latin America, followed by other branches of Christian Protestantism. However, in recent years and as a consequence of the conflict in the Middle East, the Syrian colony in the country has increased, and with it, the construction of some mosques in some of the main cities.
This multitudinous centennial event that I mentioned before, corresponds to the procession of the image of the Divine Shepherdess (Divina Pastora), an invocation of the Virgin Mary that had its origin at the beginning of the 18th century in the Spanish city of Seville, and that would cross the Atlantic Ocean a few years later to take root in the city until it became a tradition that passes from parents to children.
Cada 14 de Enero, en mi ciudad se realiza el evento multitudinario más grande e importante del país, además, está considerado, dentro del catolicismo, la tercera mayor congregación de personas del mundo, tan sólo por detrás de los correspondientes a la Virgen de Guadalupe en México, y la Virgen de Fátima en Portugal.
Aunque Venezuela es un estado laico, y nuestra constitución consagra la libertad de cultos, lo cierto es que la mayoría de la población practica el catolicismo, fundamentalmente porque fue la religión impuesta por el Imperio Español durante sus 300 años de presencia en América Latina, seguido por otras ramas del protestantismo cristiano. Sin embargo, en los últimos años y como consecuencia de la conflictividad en el Medio Oriente, se ha incrementado la colonia siria en el país, y con ello, la construcción de algunas mezquitas en algunas de las principales ciudades.
Este multitudinario evento centenario que mencioné anteriormente, corresponde a la procesión de la imagen de la Divina Pastora, una advocación de la Virgen María que tuvo su origen a principios del Siglo XVIII en la ciudad española de Sevilla, y que cruzaría el Oceáno Atlántico unos pocos años después para echar raíces en la ciudad hasta convertirse en una tradición que pasa de padres a hijos.
As I have described in previous posts, this procession is usually attended by more than three million parishioners from all corners of the country, and even travelers from other countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe, who accompany the shepherdess in her 7.5 kilometers shoulder ride from the neighboring town of Santa Rosa to the Metropolitan Cathedral of the city.
Although it is an activity of the Catholic Church, it is not excluded the participation of people who profess other beliefs, even, its importance has transcended the limits of religions to become a true experience, not only spiritual but also touristic and sociological, which is well worth living at least once in a lifetime.
This photos that I share with you today were taken in the town of Santa Rosa a few days before the procession, during the preparations for this great event.
Como he descrito en posts anteriores, en esta procesión suelen participar hasta poco más de tres millones de feligreses de todos los rincones del país, e incluso, viajeros provenientes de otros países de América Latina, el Caribe y Europa, quienes acompañan a la pastora en su recorrido en hombros de 7,5 kilómetros desde la vecina población de Santa Rosa hasta la Catedral Metropolitana de la ciudad.
Aunque es una actividad de la Iglesia Católica, no está excluída la participación de personas que profesen otras creencias, incluso, su importancia ha trascendido los límites propios de las religiones hasta convertirse en una verdadera experiencia, no sólo espiritual sinó también turística y sociológica, que bien vale la pena vivir al menos una vez en la vida.
Estas fotos que hoy comparto con todos ustedes, las tomé en la población de Santa Rosa unos días antes de la procesión, durante los preparativos previos de este magno evento.
