Whether as an employer or employee, do you take pride in the job you are doing?

Back in the days, many people made the mistake of jumping into professions that do not align with what they want for themselves. Some didn't have the slightest idea of what they need from a career, all they did was to move with the trend and embrace certain professions with the belief that they will be as happy as every other person in that field.

In my country, being a Doctor, Lawyer or Engineer was and is still the dream of many people.

Even those that didn't want to do any of these were pressurized by peers and families alike to take up such a profession. University entrance exams were often overwhelming due to the number of aspirants that were willing to study each of these professional courses. Some ended up admitting more students than supposed, but it was never up to 30% of the overall applicants.

The 70% that didn't get those high ranked professional courses would be left with no other choice but to apply for lower-rated courses, the likes of botany, zoology, crop science, and co. These were courses often seen as 3rd or 4th choice for many aspirants. In my days at Universities, courses like Estate Management had less than 30 students in each level while those in Medicine had a whopping 400+ students.

Funny enough, the number is getting more overwhelming at the moment because people haven't realized the fact that everyone cannot be a lawyer or medical doctor. Most importantly, being in that line doesn't guarantee that your life will be filled with fulfilment.

But then, l can't blame anyone for trying. Who doesn't want to be called a doctor or Engineer or Barrister?

The dress code of people in that line of job is well tushed up and they work in luxurious cubicles 😬 - so, why not?

We live in a world where the work people do determines the type of respect they will get from neighbours, classmates, peer groups and family members. Even our parents prefer to be a doctor's mum than the mother of a teacher.

Most of the time people often overlook the fact that others are growing their net worth rapidly while doing low ranked jobs. Some don't even care about doing a job that gives them a sense of fulfilment, it's all about the hype and pride attached to working as a Doctor, Barrister, Pilot, etc

It's disheartening to see the perception people have about other professions - let's say farming, hairdressing and likes.

At the mention of a farmer, we paint mental pictures of an unkempt person that has to till the soil under the sun or in the rain.

In this part of the world, many people won't care about your net worth as a farmer. All they know is that you don't have a company-sponsored car or that you are not living in a Penthouse suite so, they will subconsciously place you below the pecking order and make a caricature of you at all times. Our agric experts and others in that line of job are made to feel less of a human than they are.

When all this pressure comes into play, most of those that are earning relatively well as a driver, farmer or small business owner finds it hard to take pride in their job. They find it hard to speak out about their profession because they feel like they would be cajoled for being a farmer or hairdresser or small business owner. Tsk tsk!

Well well well, here comes the big question;

Are you a thief? Did you hit people and take their money? Did you scam anyone and take their money?

If you are not doing these, you also don't need to be ashamed of the job you are doing!
