So they split the party...

Ok so, this story is from my Star Wars campaign. You can checkout the backstory of the game here, as well as the cave story. One thing that I would like to point out is Amy, the Enforcer of the Fearsome Fist wasn't in the game yet. The player was playing Ami'Swem Bortjort, a Twi'lek Politico. Ami was the group's face and chief Charmer/Negotiator/talky-talky person. This will be important later.

The Setup

So the team had just recused an Imperial Scientist name Dr. Evelyn Keets. Dr. Keets had developed a combat enhancement drug called Prism. Prism was basically a Hulk serum, it made you near impossible to hurt with handheld weapons, dramatically improved strength and reflexes, and caused rapid tissue expansion. And the tissue expansion was the problem, the body could not take strain of the expansion and would tear itself apart within about 3 minutes. So if you took the stuff, it would kill you.

So they return to the Wampa Stompa, the Gorekatz flag ship to interrogate the doctor. Dr. Keets is very free with the information she has and lets them know that one of her assistants has made a small breakthrough with powered life crystals. The only known place in the galaxy where they could be found was Rafa system.

Sound good so far? Good. My intention was to have them head out to Rafa V and find the imperial research facility. NOPE. One of the players knows out of game lore about Rafa and says they need a cloaking device to hide the ship to get close enough. So now my nice semi-planned gazebo filled planet of Mad Max raiders is sidelined to find a cloaking device.

The Idea

So the group sat and argued about what would be the best way to go about getting the cloaking device. They came up with a couple of different plans, including but limited too; robbing a casino, stealing a ship, setting up a program to siphon off credits from slot machines, just stealing a cloaking device, the list goes on.

Now as they were talking about this heist they kept getting more and more excited. So being the push over that I am, I just rolled with it. They were doing a lot of the work by just coming up with ideas and it does sound fun.

The Job

I take the ideas the players have come up with and craft the job. So the job was the players hear about the ships fixer, a Pantoran named Ambro Hypoke. They meet him in his office, which some might describe as a broom closet, and as about the cloaking device. He says he doesn't have one, but know some people who might and sets up a meeting with them. Now these people are the Shell Hutt kajidic, a Hutt crime family that specialize in technology and heavy armor.

So they meet with the Shell Hutt majordomo and are given the job. A smuggler by the name of Fut Duo had stolen a ship from them and they wanted it back. They would also reward the group with extra credits if they could bring in Fut alive. Being the mercenaries that they are, they are all about that extra bit of cash. The majordomo states that he is most likely in "The Belt", a collection of several asteroid casinos in the Oseon. He also did not to tell them that several bounty hunters had been killed trying to capture him.

The Heist

So the team head to the belt. After a brief investigation, they find Fut Duo at a high stakes Sabacc table. Now the ship they are after is a Punworcca 116-class interstellar sloop. Now I keep describing it as "Count Dooku's Ship", because that's what it is. It is actually Count Dooku's ship. In researching the ship they find out how small it is (it holds 3 people) and come up with a plan. Ami is going to be charming and seduce Fut into taking her on "a pleasure cruise" around the sector. Once they are out sailing around, Ami will disable Fut and steal the ship. Solid plan, so naturally here is where it starts to go wrong.

Ami proceeds with the seduction and it is going really well (the dice were really in her favor that night). Now the rest of the team decides that this plan is to complicated and proceed to the parking garage/hanger and are just going to find and steal the ship.

So they split the party

Dong decides to hack into the hanger bays systems and find out where the ship is.The hangers security is not exactly a joke, but it's also not a priority. Dong manages to find an out of way spot to hack into the system by making a few good rolls on Skullduggery checks. Once inside the system he proceeds to run circles around the system admin with his Computer checks and calls himself Hackmysack69. While the system admin is trying to hunt him down, Dong finds a ship that belonging to Fut Duo. However, it's to large to be the ship they are looking for.

So Dong piggybacks the signal into the docked ship, named Gambling Debt and finds the sloop in its hanger bay. So the team goes to investigate the Gambling Debt. As they approach the ship, a dozen Wookiees with stealth fields appear near its ramp. They tell the group they are not welcome and need to leave. So now the group realizes they have to take out all of these Wookiees to get on board.

Dong comes up with a new plan. He decides to hack the ship's weapons and have them kill the Wookiees. So he goes back to his access point, uses the backdoors he left behind, and proceeds to use the ships weapons to end the Wookiees. They then head back to the ship and deal with the remaining 6 Wookiee guards and a handful of crew.

This happens over the course of around 30 minutes. Ami is still with Fut at the Sabacc table, doing the original plan. Fut gets a call from his ship saying someone is breaking into the computer and controlling the ship weapons. He is told most of the Wookiee guards are dead and people are trying to board the ship. Now Fut, who is enamored with Ami, wants to bring her to the ship and find out what's going on. His two remaining Wookiee guards decloak and head out in front.

While they are on their way the team gains control of the ship and plans on locking them in the hanger bay when they arrive. Now the Wookiees head inside and try to regain control of the ship only to find out that all the doors to the hanger bay are locked. Ami convinces Fut to get on the ship and they get locked in. Ami proceeds to hide in the Sloop while the Wookiees try to get the doors open. This is when the ship leaves the hanger bay and heads out into space. Ami tells Fut to hide in the sloop with her and once he is inside, the team opens the hanger doors enough to suck the remaining two Wookiees into space.

The Fallout

So its at this time I explain a few things to the group. First the team thought Fut was an Ex-Imperial officer. This was true, he served on the first Death Star but resigned after the destruction of his home world of Alderaan. He used his knowledge and connections to help the rebellion. Fut Duo is now an agent of the New Republic. He is bringing the sloop to Coruscant to be placed in the Clone Wars Museum.

The team had assumed that the Wookiees were honorless and evil. However, the Wookiees that were serving Fut Duo were former Kessel spice mine slaves and their clan owed him a life debt. Ami had found this out while "doing the seduction" and figured he could just help them get a cloaking device from the New Republic.

The boarding team begins discussing just killing Fut, dumping the body, and blaming pirates. Ami is appalled by the teams
behavior and decides that, no matter what, she is leaving the team. So at this time I begin doing what little damage control I can. I have Fut suggest that they let him keep and deliver the Sloop, in exchange they can keep the Gambling Debt. He figures it's worth enough for them to buy a cloaking device for their other ship. The party agrees and Ami leaves with Fut in the sloop for Coruscant.

When they get back to the Wampa Stompa, they get chewed out by HR for damaging the Gorekatz reputation with the New Republic and lose most of the credits they should have got for selling the ship. The only reason why they were not fired is Ami, who is now the Gorekatz liaison on Coruscant, said they should finish what they started.

Epilogue

And that's how it ends. They sell the ship, get reprimand by their superiors for making the company look bad, and Ami becomes Amy. They proceed to Rafa V with the cloaking device, and it was this point I told them that it was not necessary. At no point did I say they needed a cloaking device. That was all @jacobtothe doing, not me. I got about 4 or 5 sessions out of that side quest. And my players did most of the work. I really do enjoy being the Game Master sometimes.

So that my story. Do you have a "lets spilt the party" story? Let me know what in the comments. Stay safe and roll on.
