On my upper body day at the gym, I start with a plank warm-up, where I feel like a soldier in formation, battling gravity with all my might. I begin with beginner planks, and then, as I warm up a bit more, I move on to strict ones. Then I move on to cable pull-downs, where I resemble a fisherman trying to catch the biggest fish in the ocean.
After that, I tackle the Hammer machine, feeling like I'm pulling a truck with my mighty 10-pound discs. Followed by the machine row, where I become a bricklayer carrying a wet sandbag. Then I shift my focus away from the back for a bit to work at least two muscle groups a day; and move on to bicep curls, where my right arm does all the heavy lifting. Then with the left arm and a dumbbell, I always have to do some unilateral repetitions to even out both arms.
Finally, dips, where it seems like I'm playing "I'm falling but not falling." And with a bit of tricep pushdowns to finish off, I end this upper body training day. For women, it's necessary to lose the fear and rejection of working the upper body, to avoid those dreaded arm and back flabs.
