Al fin ha dado inicio a la copa libertadores. Monagas SC, el equipo de mi corazón está en un grupo muy complicado (Y esto lo diría sin importar donde hubiera quedado). El nivel de los favoritos en la competición es muy elevado, por lo que las expectativas son solo hacer un buen papel. ¿y eso qué significa? Clasificar a los octavos de final sería una sorpresa, muy grata, pero sorpresa al fin.
Por tal razón, el equipo va enfocado en quedar segundo, dando por hecho que el primer lugar se disputará entre Boca Junior y Colocolo. Siendo más razonable, tomando en consideración el nivel de mi equipo, considero que quedar tercero ya sería algo loable, además de tener la oportunidad de seguir en la competencia internacional, aunque un peldaño más abajo.
Debo decir que tardé un poco en publicar mi opinión sobre el encuentro debido a la forma en cómo se desarrolló el mismo. Aún estoy asimilando la manera tan pasiva y pausada con la que el Monagas SC jugó. Siento que se abusó de la displicencia.
Es muy posible que al leer estas líneas haya quien no concuerde con mis palabras, pero quiero resaltar que me estoy basando únicamente en el primer partido de la copa libertadores. En él, Monagas SC enfrentó a Boca Junior de Argentina. “Defender el cero a cero”, está claro que esa era la meta del equipo desde el pitazo inicial. Y ese fue el resultado final del encuentro. ¿Y entonces por qué mi opinión tan negativa?
Porque el equipo salió a defender desde el comienzo, algo que todos los que conocemos el nivel del futbol venezolano esperábamos, pero entonces pasó algo que pudo cambiar el rumbo del encuentro. Corría el minuto 40 y el jugador de Boca Junior, Valdez, cometió una falta merecedora de sanción, además de impedir una escapada solitaria del delantero del Monagas. Roja directa y a las duchas. Ahora mi equipo tenía un hombre más, pero nada cambio en el transcurrir del partido. Seguía la misma tónica.
Llega el minuto 86 y una mano por parte de Roncaglia dejaba al Boca Junior con 9 jugadores en el campo. Una amarilla, sumada a la que ya tenía, y roja. Era el momento de atacar y doblegar al equipo argentino. Al menos 10 minutos más se jugarían. Teníamos la oportunidad de ganar por primera vez. Estaban dadas las condiciones. Pero nada pasó, simplemente nos conformamos con el 0 a 0, lo que se pudo confirmar con las palabras del técnico del Monagas SC tras el encuentro, en las que decía sobre el rival que seguro sería el campeón del torneo.
No soy técnico ni jugador de futbol, pero creo que se pudo hacer mucho más. Nadie esperaba que le ganáramos a Boca Junior, así que ¿Qué mas daba arriesgar? Si se perdía, pues eso era lo normal, ¿no? Pero si se ganaba, eso sería historia, además de darnos el primer lugar del grupo tras el empate de Pereira y Colocolo. En fin, es mi opinión.
Espero equivocarme al creer que el tercer lugar es la única aspiración posible y real, que el equipo el próximo miércoles en Chile, ante Colocolo, haga un buen partido, dejando de lado el miedo o el complejo de inferioridad y se traiga un resultado positivo y que nos dé más puntos. Siento que se puede jugar mejor, mucho mejor, pero hace falta creérselo, algo de lo que adolece nuestro futbol, algo que se debe y se puede cambiar.

I must say that it took me a while to publish my opinion about the match due to the way it unfolded. I am still coming to terms with the passive and leisurely manner in which Monagas SC played. I feel that the lack of attention was abused.
It is very possible that when reading these lines there are those who do not agree with my words, but I want to emphasize that I am basing my opinion only on the first match of the Copa Libertadores. In it, Monagas SC faced Boca Junior from Argentina. "Defending the nil-nil", it is clear that this was the team's goal from the opening whistle. And that was the final result of the match, so why my negative opinion?
Because the team went out to defend from the beginning, something that all of us who know the level of Venezuelan soccer expected, but then something happened that could have changed the course of the match. It was the 40th minute and Boca Junior's player, Valdez, committed a foul deserving of a penalty, besides preventing a solitary breakaway by the Monagas striker. A straight red card and a trip to the showers. Now my team had an extra man, but nothing changed in the course of the match. It was still the same.
The 86th minute arrived and a handball by Roncaglia left Boca Junior with 9 players on the field. A yellow card, added to the one he already had, and a red card. It was time to attack and break the Argentine team. At least 10 more minutes would be played. We had the chance to win for the first time. The conditions were right. But nothing happened, we simply settled for a 0-0 draw, which was confirmed by the words of the Monagas SC coach after the match, in which he said about the rival that they would surely be the champions of the tournament.
I am neither a coach nor a soccer player, but I think we could have done much more. Nobody expected us to beat Boca Junior, so what was the point of taking risks? If we lost, that was normal, wasn't it? But if we won, that would be history, besides giving us first place in the group after Pereira and Colocolo drew. Anyway, that's my opinion.
I hope I am wrong in believing that third place is the only possible and real aspiration, that next Wednesday in Chile, against Colocolo, the team will play a good game, leaving aside fear or inferiority complex and bring back a positive result that will give us more points. I feel that we can play better, much better, but we need to believe it, something that our soccer suffers from, something that must and can be changed.
