[ESP/ENG] Fuimos a hacer Highline / We went Highlining

We previously mentioned in our post about Slackline that the most challenging modality of the sport is the Highline.

A modality that I (William) had not practiced for 6 years, and Victoria had never tried before.

But, last weekend we had the opportunity to do it not far from home. In fact, within the same city where we live (Santiago).

A friend had been inviting us a long time ago and we felt ready to give it a try.

We have already mentioned before that the modality we practice and feel comfortable with is Trickline (Slackline for tricks) so without a doubt the Highline means getting out of our comfort zone.

This Highline was about 90 mts (300 ft) long and it was about 40-50 mts (150 ft) high in the middle.

Getting on a Highline that is anchored on vertical crags is much easier than if it were anchored on hills or "diagonal" surfaces.

This is because if the ledge were vertical we could simply climb up to the start of the Slackline where it is much easier to stand up, whereas on this highline, being anchored on a hill, we have to slide away from the anchor by about 15% of the total distance of the line to be far enough away from the ground in case of a fall.

Once there, in order to go from being under the line to being on top, you have to do a movement that is affectionately called "roasted chicken" 🐓

It consists of hanging on the line with both of your arms only one leg, then you have to pass the free leg stretched over the line as far as you can, then you have to "kick" or "throw" the stretched leg to one side to make a pendulum movement while bringing your chest towards the line. If the movement is done correctly, you should already be lying on the line.

In the last of previous photos, Victoria was laughing because she got on in the opposite direction 😅

After lying on the line, all that's left is to sit down and try to stand from the position or style of mount that you feel most comfortable.

Since it was her first time, she decided not to try to stand up. In fact, she made a lot of progress on her first time because initiation to the Highline should be progressive, as there are many factors that can affect the experience.

Generally no one walks their first Highline, in fact it can take many attempts to barely master the "roasted chicken". Usually the first thing to do is to sit on the line and "feel it", feel the tension, the sway, the wind, breathe, and try to control your fears.

Then comes learning how to do the "roasted chicken", then how to sit, then you learn some mount, and once you have mastered all that is that you should try to stand up and walk.

I did have some more previous experience so I did try to stand up.

And since I hadn't been in a Highline for 6 years and it is also something completely out of my usual.... So, I fell off. But that's part of the experience, sometimes being there hanging from the harness is almost as much fun as walking the the line.

Pues me caí.

The important thing after the falls is to be able to climb up to the line again, to repeat the "roasted chicken" and of course to try again and again until you succeed.

For now, we are unable to stand up on the Highline. But that won't stop us.

We will keep practicing until we do it and most likely we will share our success here with you too.
