De todas las cosas maravillosas que me han pasado este diciembre, visitar el cerro El Café en Valencia, Venezuela ha sido una de mis favoritas.
Principalmente porque es la primera vez que visitaba ese cerro. Durante mis años como estudiante deseaba conocerlo y aunque me quedaba muy cerca de la universidad nunca logré hacerlo. Esta vez lo hice en bici —para variar— y vaya que lo disfruté!
Of all the wonderful things that have happened to me this December, visiting El Café hill in Valencia, Venezuela has been one of my favorites.
Mainly because it was the first time I visited that hill. During my years as a student I wanted to visit it and although it was very close to the university I never managed to do it. This time I did it by bike —what a surprise— and I really enjoyed it!
Como cosa rara a último momento decidí anotarme en el plan. Ya todos los carros estaban ocupados excepto el carro de Johann, quien amablemente me ofreció viajar con ellos, el Team Vitafer. A las 5:40am ya estaban en la puerta de mi casa Manuel, Aldemaro y Johann, prestos a fijar mi bicicleta en un portabicis hecho por este último. Me sorprendió gratamente su destreza para hacer tales cosas!
A las 6 de la mañana estábamos en el punto de encuentro cerca del peaje disfrutando de un hermoso amanecer, mientras esperábamos encontrarnos con Claudia y Alix, en la vía se uniría Omaris.
As a rare thing at the last minute I decided to sign up for the plan. All the cars were already occupied except Johann's car, who kindly offered me to ride with them, the Team Vitafer. At 5:40am Manuel, Aldemaro and Johann were already by my doorstep, ready to fix my bike on a bike rack made by the latter. I was pleasantly surprised by their dexterity to do such things!
At 6am we were at the meeting point near the tollbooth enjoying a beautiful sunrise, while waiting to meet Claudia and Alix, Omaris would join us on the road.
Después de rodar aproximadamente 55 kilómetros en carro llegamos al lugar. Estacionamos los carros y comenzamos nuestro recorrido en bicicleta. Desde el inicio nos enfrentamos con fuertes ascensos, en principio el camino era de cemento y más adelante empezaría el camino de tierra. Cada quien siguió a su ritmo y así nos fuimos agrupando. Omaris fue mi compañera en esta ruta, afortunadamente!
After riding approximately 55 kilometers by car we arrived at the place. We parked the cars and began our bike tour. From the beginning we were faced with steep climbs, at first the road was cement and later the dirt road would begin. Everyone went at their own pace and so we were grouped together. Omaris was my companion on this route, fortunately!
Quedé hipnotizada con la vegetación del lugar. Era un sitio fresco, incluso frío. En palabras de Manuel "es un bosque majestuoso repleto de coníferas" y efectivamente lo era. Estábamos rodeados de pinos de todos los tamaños, helechos, flores silvestres y su respectiva fauna. Me detuve todas las veces necesarias para fotografiar el paisaje y abrazar uno que otro árbol. Espero que las fotos compensen lo corta que me quedo al describir lo que vi.
I was mesmerized by the vegetation of the place. It was a cool place, even cold. In Manuel's words "its a majestic forest full of conifers" and indeed it was. We were surrounded by pines of all sizes, ferns, wild flowers and their respective fauna. I stopped as many times as necessary to take pictures of the landscape and hug one or another tree. I hope the photos make up for the shortness of my description of what I saw.
Cada cierto tiempo Johann se devolvía para chequear que Omaris y yo estuviéramos bien y volvía a subir, nosotras seguíamos conversando y tomando fotos. Así recorrimos la mitad del camino hasta que volvimos a encontrarnos todos, nos hidratamos y recargamos energía porque nos esperaba un tramo aún más difícil.
Every now and then Johann would turn back to check that Omaris and I were ok and go back up, while we continued talking and taking pictures. We went halfway up the trail until we all met up again, hydrated and recharged our energy because we had an even more difficult stretch ahead of us.
Después de alternar entre caminar y pedalear llegamos finalmente a la cumbre, el mirador del cerro. Descansamos mientras contemplábamos la hermosa vista. Después de hablar un poco y tomar fotos nos preparamos para mi parte favorita: el descenso!
After alternating between walking and pedaling we finally reached the summit, the viewpoint of the hill. We rested while contemplating the beautiful view. After talking a bit and taking pictures we got ready for my favorite part: the descent!

Puedo decir que el descenso valió todo el esfuerzo de la subida, hacía mucho que no me soltaba tanto bajando y no se imaginan lo mucho que lo disfruté. Por supuesto, con toda la precaución posible ya que había muchas zanjas en el camino de tierra.
I can say that the descent was worth all the effort of the climb, it had been a long time since I had been so comfortable going downhill and you can't imagine how much I enjoyed it. Of course, with all possible caution as there were many ditches on the dirt road.
Para cerrar con broche de oro, decidimos ir a comernos unos tequeñitos de jojoto (maíz) en La Entrada. Una vez satisfechos, Johann propuso ir a las Aguas Termales de Trincheras, ya que estábamos a pocos kilómetros.
To close with a flourish, we decided to go eat some jojoto (corn) tequeñitos at La Entrada. Once we were satisfied, Johann suggested going to the Trincheras Hot Springs, since we were only a few kilometers away.

Desde hace muchos años el Centro Termal Las Trincheras es visitado por personas de diferentes lugares del centro del país atraídos por los beneficios terapéuticos que se obtienen de las aguas que alcanzan temperaturas mayores a los 42ºC. El sitio también cuenta con hotel, sauna y cámara hiperbárica. Nosotros no estábamos interesados en bañarnos en sus piscinas así que mientras esperábamos a Johann decidimos recorrer el lugar y apreciar su arquitectura.
For many years the Trincheras Thermal Center has been visited by people from different parts of the center of the country attracted by the therapeutic benefits obtained from the waters that reach temperatures of more than 42ºC. The site also has a hotel, sauna and hyperbaric chamber. We were not interested in bathing in its pools so while we waited for Johann we decided to walk around the place and appreciate its architecture.
Más tarde regresamos a nuestra ciudad, cansados pero recargados. Felices de desbloquear rutas nuevas. Plenos, disfrutando del momento presente y, por mi parte, agradecida de contar con la compañía de buenos amigos.
Later we returned to our city, tired but recharged. Happy to unlock new routes. Fulfilled, aware that we are enjoying the present moment and, for my part, grateful to have the company of good friends.
