"It is not possible to play. This is not football for me; it's another nice sport because smaller teams can compete with bigger teams. It's good for the fans, but they also want to see football played. I liked everything about the lads, from the first minute to the last, we knew how to suffer, we didn't take risks at the back, the players played well. - Carlo Ancelotti after Real Madrid's narrow win over Cacereño in the Copa del Rey.

Cup matches have their magic, from Ancelotti's post-match statements, I would rescue "it's another beautiful sport" changing, yes, the "another sport" part because the cup clashes are indeed another football, one that is closer to the origins of the game, with small stadiums, picturesque stands in some villages and imperfect fields; the Copa del Rey is also football and Real Madrid is obliged to win in everything that is football.

Beyond Real Madrid's historic obligation to win everything in which it competes - the Copa del Rey is a tournament that has been a struggle for the Casa Blanca of late - Ancelotti decided to send an alternate team to the battered pitch at the Estadio Príncipe Felipe de Cáceres; The Italian tactician opted to leave out eight first-choice players (Curtois, Carvajal, Kroos, Benzema, Modric, Alaba, Mendy and Vinícius), thus opting for names with few minutes like Odriozola, Nacho, Lucas Vázquez, and even Eden Hazard, who has returned to the white kit after two and a half months of not doing so -although for what he contributed, it was as if he had not been there at all-.

To see Real Madrid lift the Copa del Rey, one has to go back to 2014, which was the last year in which Los Blancos managed to win the domestic cup, and in Cáceres they made their debut for this year's edition of the tournament in the round of 32 against a combative and brave Cacereño side.

The home side were brave, they came into the game highly motivated with everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose against the current European Champions; the intensity and pressure exerted by Julio Cobos' side, coupled with the terrible state of the pitch at the Príncipe Felipe, meant that Ancelotti's side suffered more than enough in the middle of the night in Cáceres.

But the poor state of the pitch was a factor for both teams and just after the first quarter of an hour, the home keeper was put in trouble after a shot from Dani Ceballos went just wide in what was Real Madrid's clearest chance of a first half in which Ancelotti's side struggled to generate good football due to the increasing pressure from the home side and the decreasing condition of the pitch, which became even more impracticable as the minutes ticked by.

The Extremadura side were encouraged by their spirited fans and also by the feeling of inoperativeness of their opponents; Real Madrid were having a hard time in terms of attacking generation, but towards the end of the first half, they also began to have a hard time in defence as the home side came forward in search of a goal that would give them the lead before the break. The home side gave the impression of being much more involved in the game, they were full of the ball and pressed every movement of a Merengue side that looked uncomfortable and inoperative on the battered Extremadura pitch.

The break gave Ancelotti's side time to take a breather and perhaps refresh their ideas as they looked to approach the second half with better spirit, the first 45 minutes of their performance were almost pitiful; although the second half saw a slight change in the face of Real Madrid, it was not as if there had been an absolutely palpable improvement in the development of their football. Ancelotti brought on Rüdiger, Valverde and Vallejo to replace Militao, Tchouameni and Odriozola (who was out injured), but little changed in a game that was becoming too indigestible for the European and LaLiga champions against a team that competes three categories below them.

As the game entered a phase of running into space, Madrid showed off their ability to find their opponents' backs on one occasion when Marco Asensio had a go at goal and Iván fisted the ball away. After the dangerous chance, Real Madrid's first real chance of the game, Ancelotti looked to shake the Merengue tree a little more and brought on the youthful Álvaro Rodríguez to replace the inconsequential Eden Hazard - never mind when you read that last sentence.-

It all seemed to come to nothing for a Real Madrid side who were struggling to find their football -a true reflection of their recent performances, as Ancelotti's side have long since failed to offer 90 minutes of absolute assurance-, when Rodrygo Goes, who had been as inoperative as the rest of his teammates, came up with a goal from another game; the Brazilian faced up and left two Cacereño defenders in the lurch before cutting inside the box with a monumental turn of his left foot and scoring with a great touch of quality with his right foot.

With Rodrygo's magical goal in the 69th minute, Real Madrid broke the deadlock in a match in which things were getting very bad, Los Blancos couldn't find a way through, the good football of the start of the current campaign seemed to have abandoned them at what point in the tournament and getting back to the good work with the ball is costing Ancelotti's side, who continue to solve their commitments almost by the weight of the shirt and the great individuals that they have in their squad. The Whites have a visit to Villarreal at La Cerámica in the 16th LaLiga matchday of the season.
