I know you're going to say: does this woman do everything? Well, yes, since I was a child, my parents enrolled me in all the activities that could be done to avoid being idle at home: dancing, singing, theater (I did children's theater until I became an adult), plaster sculptures, painting, and many other things. But the first extracurricular activity I did was Karate Do ūü•č, and this is the story.

Well, it turns out that when I was 6 or 7 years old my dad took me and my brother to our first karate class for who knows what year, what I can remember most is that my sensei was Miguel Rosales and I know that that lasted a very short time because Miguel left town for a while and left us in charge of a Senpai, Jhonny Calderon (I'm not sure of his last name, sorry) what I do remember is that Jhonny was a yellow belt and he was our instructor, I really have no idea how long he lasted doing this job but during this time came our first belt promotion; we were doing our Kata and quite a bit of Kumite (I hated Kumite).

Kata consists of a series of "steps" with positions within Karate Do, they are routines that show how the dedication and execution of each of the positions, and each one is executed as if you had an imaginary opponent. Each Kata has a name and depending on the ribbon you have and want to ascend you will have a different Kata. It also depends on the style of Karate Do, I started with Shoto Kan, one of the best known styles within the country.

Kumite is just the reason why all kids want to get into Karate, to get into hitting (ha,ha,ha), and it is basically that, the encounters between two opponents, but of course, it has a series of rules to follow: no hitting in the face, no hitting in the back, no hitting in the low points, sometimes you don't even have to hurt your partner to score the points. I really hated this part, I always felt weaker than the rest of the girls and that's why I avoided Kumite.

Following the story, I reached my yellow belt, but just after that the Sensei returned to town and I continued with my training. The years passed and I went to several tournaments and several promotions of belt, I arrived to green belt (the belts in Shoto Kan are: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, black) also we know them as Kyu, and they are promoting from the 9th to the 1st Kyu, I arrived to the 4th Kyu. This story ended one day before I went to Puerto Ordaz to present the promotion to blue belt. I was 11 years old and I no longer liked being there, my brother continued and reached brown belt. It is one of the few things I regret, I should have continued, at that age one does not know what one wants with one's life and needs guidance; at least I did not know what I wanted. But since the body has "muscular memory" I tried to reproduce many of those movements with little success, I tried to record a video but it was embarrassing.

What I remember most about that time was receiving a new karategi every year as a gift, and I always had two sets of ribbons in case we got them dirty. My pants were always part of my karategi, because we practiced every day. It's worth mentioning that we were strictly forbidden to start fights in the street, it was grounds for expulsion, we could only fight if it was for defense but we could never start any.

The most difficult thing was to avoid the comments and the bullying of the children in the street, we walked every afternoon with our karategi from the house to the dojo and there was always a lot of laughter and comments around our attire. Later on we decided to carry our karategi in a backpack and change when we arrived at the dojo. Self-control is one of the things Karate does not teach most, and doing a regursion, is one of the reasons why I hate senseless confrontations, there are people who even at this point think it is fun to make fun of people just for the sake of making them angry.

Unfortunately I don't keep any photos from that time, I know they must exist but none of these photos are in my hands or those of my relatives. The advantage of this period is that we keep everything thanks to the appearance of digital cameras. However, there is something much better, the photographs of my certificates courtesy of my dad. ūüėä

This initiative of the friends of @hisparadio and @nathanpieters: Iniciativa: Kumite! Cuéntame tu historia de artes marciales // Hive Challenge: Kumite! Tell me your martial arts story seemed so cool and brought back so many memories that I really wanted to go back to karate 25 years later. Even my dad, when I asked him to send me the pictures of the certificates, said: "I thought you would come back to Karate, you should go in and take the little boy" (referring to my nephew who even has his karategi). So I'm thinking hard about it and it's highly probable that I'll try again, I don't lose anything with that. For this very reason I thank you, and if I try again I will let you know.
