The theft of the century

We must agree that this phrase is totally devalued, it has been used so many times and in different events that no one believes that a criminal act is the most important in the last 100 years because among its description it is labeled in this way.

I do not know when and how the phrase began to be used, although I have no doubt that it was born from the bowels of photojournalism, and probably the first person to have used it did so honestly and without any doubt. For that journalist, that fact was the most important that had been known in many years, up to a century he dared to declaim.

Over the years, millions of newspaper pages and thousands of hours on TV and radio have mentioned events that have been labeled the "robbery of the century" and today it is one more catchphrase that is used quite frequently to emphasize some event.

But here I am to talk about sports and in this activity, the phrase has been used and is used with unusual frequency, it would seem that, if it is not included in the title or the development of the note, it would lack interest, something totally false but old habits is hard to shake.

The first sporting case that I am aware of and that precisely includes an Argentine was the very famous boxing match between the American Jack Dempsey and Luis Ángel Firpo, who was called “the wild bull of the Pampas”. In that fight, the title for the world heavyweight championship held by the former was in dispute, and the confrontation was promoted as "the fight of the century" another bombastic title that also lost forcefulness by reiterating so much.

Returning to the fight, it was held at Madison Square Garden on September 14, 1923, and it lasted only 3 minutes and 57 seconds, but it was unmatched in a frenzy. Firpo fell 7 times and Dempsey 2, in one of those two falls, Firpo took him out of the ring through the ropes, and it took Dempsey 18 seconds to return to the ring, but the referee's absurd account allowed that delay, if Firpo had been impartial he would have won the championship, in the second round Dempsey finally knocked him out and everything ended as expected. According to the local press, it was the robbery of the century.

What does seem to be confirmed is that it really was the fight of the century, since this year marks exactly one century since its completion and the New York mayor's office will celebrate the event that it called "the centenary of the fight of the century." In 1971 the world title was disputed between Joe Frazer and Muhammad Ali, it was promoted as "The new fight of the century" although as far as I remember there was no robbery there.

I know of a case that touches me closely, although to be completely honest I was not a witness, I had not even been born at that time and I only tell it through the mouth of another, an uncle-in-law (he was married to one of my father's sisters), he had been Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata player, my favorite team. The chronicles of the graphic media of that time also echo the event, although we know that what has already been done in sports is almost impossible to change. It was a match between my team and San Lorenzo de Almagro, they were the last dates of the first division tournament and Gimnasia was a leader together with Boca Juniors, they had met two dates before and Boca won 3-2 with two goals in the last minutes, one in a clearly advanced position and the other for a non-existent penalty. On November 24, 1933, the match took place and from the beginning, it was clearly noted that the referee would not let Gimnasia prevail in any way, their performance was so biased that in the second half, the players of my team decided to sit down and just sit down. they got up to get out of the way every so often without opposition from their rival, the game ended 7 to 1 and it was the robbery of the century according to the chronicles of that moment. It also had the dubious honor of being the first "sit-in" of players to protest partial arbitration, later in Argentine soccer that action was repeated at least two more times throughout history.

A few days ago, as a comment on a post of mine about Club Atlético Huracán, @her18lux commented that he was on the field the day of the "Robbery of the Century", again that phrase indicating that something illegal had happened, this time in another match of local football. It was July 5, 2009, and on the last date Vélez Sarsfield and Huracán defined the tournament, the former being local, there were various irregularities and a disastrous performance by the referee of the match that favored the team in the white shirt with a blue V, the place for more data. After that match, the referee never directed again.

Similar situations of injustices and dubious results exist in all sports and in all countries, including the use of technology is not able to avoid them, at least for now. Let's take the big league NFL as an example, with several judges on the field, with instant replays, and with the (limited) possibility of requests for review by both teams, infractions that are often obvious cannot be avoided, and even notes that are not. They are.

Therefore, friends, we will have to continue listening and seeing the so hackneyed phrase "theft of the century" for many more centuries, despite the redundancy.
