Lo nuevo siempre trae implícito un sentimiento de esperanza. En lo material, porque pensamos que aquello adquirido con esfuerzo nos ayudará para el fin por el cual fue comprado. En lo inmaterial, porque siempre estamos sujetos a un romántico sentido de gratitud por una nueva experiencia. Para quienes apreciamos el béisbol, un día inaugural de temporada en las grandes ligas es como una nueva oportunidad de reverdecer viejas glorias o de tener la probabilidad de mirar como se consagran los peloteros y equipos preferidos.
What is new always brings with it a feeling of hope. Materially, because we think that what we have acquired with effort will help us for the purpose for which it was purchased. We are always subject to a romantic sense of gratitude for a new experience in the immaterial. Digamos, por colocar un ejemplo, un pitcher acostumbrado a pensar mucho entre lanzamientos o hacer un wind-up largo (movimiento hacia el home plate), tendrá que acortarlo por la nueva regla que limita el tiempo. And why talk about hopes or watching exploits? Because they will be marked under cover of a new set of rules imposed by the commissioner and the major league rules office. The psyche of baseball players could be affected by such an environment. Antes el lanzador no estaba limitado en tiempo entre lanzamientos.
Before continuing, it is good to clarify that such regulations were tested in minor leagues last season. This changes when there are opposing runners on the bases: the pitcher will have 20 seconds to get the ball out of his hand, whether he throws to the catcher or to one of the bases to threaten the runners. To exemplify this, I don't remember the spring game, but I do remember the play. The home team was tied at the end of the ninth inning, bases loaded and the count was 3-2; the pitcher went over the 20-second time limit and the relief pitcher was called a bad ball for not pitching on time. Run forced in by the base on balls and the home team won without breaking a sweat. Good, bad? Only time will tell, but everyone was left cold at that moment.
También sucedió otro caso parecido pero contrario y recuerdo que uno de los equipos era Atlanta (no recuerdo el rival). Mismo escenario, pero el bateador no se apuró en regresar a la caja de bateo dentro de los ocho segundos ¿Resultado? Tercer strike cantado sin haber hecho ningún intento y el equipo local perdió sin haber podido remontar. Quizás esto quite la esencia del juego, pero con el tiempo los peloteros acostumbrarán apurar sus turnos.
Another similar but opposite case also happened and I remember that one of the teams was Atlanta (I don't remember the opponent). Same scenario, but the batter did not hurry to return to the batter's box within eight seconds. The third strike was sung without having made any attempt and the home team lost without having been able to come back. Perhaps this takes away from the essence of the game, but in time the players will get used to hurrying their turns.
La siguiente regla tiene que ver con las formaciones defensivas especiales en el terreno de juego. The next rule has to do with special defensive infield formations. Since ballplayers tend to bat statistically a lot toward one area of the field, in the last few years you would see very rare defensive formations where almost all players would flip to one side of the field, to increase the chances of catching the ball, depending on each player's batting statistics, toward the area being covered. This changed as well.
Ahora pueden jugar cargados hacia un lado u otro del terreno, siempre que no traspasen equitativamente una línea imaginaria que va desde el home plate hasta la mitad del centerfield pasando por encima de segunda base. Siempre deben haber dos hombres del infield a cada lado de esa línea. Sanseacabó, adiós a los seis tipos parados de un solo lado del campo. La última regla modificada tiene que ver con el tamaño de las bases, las cuales pasan a ser más grandes (de 15 cm. por lado, pasan a ser de 18 cm. por lado). La idea es dar mayor seguridad a los peloteros en las jugadas cerradas.
They may now play loaded to one side of the infield or the other, provided they do not equally cross an imaginary line running from home plate to the middle of centerfield past second base. There must always be two infield men on each side of that line. No more six guys standing on one side of the infield. The last modified rule has to do with the size of the bases, which are now larger (from 15 cm. per side, they are now 18 cm. per side). The idea is to give more security to the ballplayers in close plays.
