Premio a la resiliencia... // Award for resilience... [ESP/ENG] || OPINION

Uff..!

Whew...! A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our last publication, telling incidents and giving our opinion, of what is happening in the fight for the pennants of the respective leagues, to get a place in the World Series. We already have our first qualifier: Houston Astros. And it is none other than one of my favorites when I started writing this series. This reassures me because it justifies so much of this server's peroration and tells us that we are not as disconnected as we thought.

Seeing the trophy in José Altuve's hands has been cathartic. And it has to do with the kind of season he had: all the fans, fans of the opponents, whistled at him when he came to bat. Well, I imagine the moment for him and I think it was intimately glorious. It couldn't have been otherwise, much more so if we take into account that such whistles were unjustified in light of the investigations of the New York sports journalist Andy Martino, who wrote a book about the sign scandal, where he exculpated the Venezuelan of cheating.

Thus, we had left the score 2-2 between the Astros and the Red Sox. The Astros won game 5 with a 9 to 1 thrashing and on game six they blanked 5 to 0 with masterful pitching by Luis García, the Venezuelan rookie who had disappointed in game 3 and greatly redeemed himself. All the pitches fell in the zone where he wanted to place the ball. And we talk about redemption because he had allowed 10 runs in his last 3.2 episodes pitched. It was as simple as that.

7 strikeouts and only one base on balls, with pitches that were around 97 MPH, in addition to allowing only one hit (a triple that took him out of the game, after 5.2 innings); were enough for the reliever to take action and define the game. Cuban Yordan Álvarez took the most valuable, delivering hits like a shower. Dusty Baker will once again manage in a World Series. He is remembered in Venezuela when he went through the local league.

And what was happening on the west coast with the Dodgers? Well, the Atlanta Braves have made us look bad and the series goes back to Georgia with the Angels down 2-3. Both teams split honors and what looked like a series flip equal to last year's has the boys out west up against the wall. At this point, the Braves only need to win one of two, while the Dodgers can only use a win in both games.

As it was, both games were won on a batting basis by the victorious team and limited the opposing team's battery by pitching. The scores? 9-2 in favor of the Braves and 11-2 in favor of the Dodgers. It has been a very balanced series when everybody expected the world champions to sweep Atlanta. Well, they didn't and the miracle Braves are one game away from their first World Series of the century.

The series continues today in Atlanta. In the meantime, the Red Sox will be crying in the valley and the hated Houston Astros will be sitting in Arlington waiting for the National League team. It has been a tough campaign for the American Midwest team and the best reward for resilience is to be able to enjoy a World Series for the third time in five years, in addition to redeeming themselves from the 2019 affair. If on top of that, they manage to finish as world champions, history will be an elegy to stoicism.
