Los recientes hechos acaecidos en Venezuela nos han quitado un poco la atención, que bien habríamos tenido sobre los juegos olímpicos París 2024, de no haber sido por el bochorno protagonizado por el ente electoral del país. Sin embargo, ha habido algo de espacio para una ventana de admiración hacia ciertos logros, además de concienciar el increíble camino a la gloria de algunos atletas. Y es de éste tema del cual nos ocuparemos en ésta nota. Recién entrando a la adolescencia comencé a dar interés a los deportes, aupado por nuestros padres, quienes nos inscribían en cuanta actividad extra-colegio conseguían para nosotros.
Y la etapa "cumbre" de aquella época llegó en los juegos panamericanos desarrollados en Caracas en 1983. A partir de allí, jamás dejamos de apreciar las proezas atléticas en los juegos olímpicos. Recién terminaba la época dorada de Nadia Comaneci, pero habían otros espectaculares deportistas que atrapaban nuestra imaginación, uno de ellos: el pertiguista ucraniano Sergei Bubka. Recuerdo al tipo quebrando su propio récord mundial, en cada reunión atlética que se le ponía por delante. El hombre fue capaz de batir la marca mundial ¡35 veces! (17 veces al aire libre y 18 ocasiones bajo techo). Me preguntaba hasta donde sería la altura máxima donde llegaría, era un saltador imbatible.

The recent events in Venezuela have taken away some of the attention we would have paid to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, had it not been for the embarrassment of the country's electoral body. And it is this subject that we will deal with in this article. The golden age of Nadia Comaneci had just ended, but there were other spectacular athletes who caught our imagination, one of them: the Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergei Bubka. I remember the guy breaking his own world record, in every athletic meeting that was put in front of him. The man was able to break the world record 35 times! (17 times outdoors and 18 times indoors). I wondered how high he would go, he was an unbeatable jumper.

Particularmente prefiero ver la femenina, pero en ésta publicación nos referiremos al gimnasta filipino Carlos Yulo. Un atleta relativamente desconocido para occidente, en un deporte generalmente dominado por los países europeos y China, el pequeño gigante se ha metido el corazón de los espectadores en el bolsillo. Y no es para menos. No sólo fue capaz de entregar la segunda medalla de la historia a su país el sábado pasado en los ejercicios libres, sino que volvió 24 horas después para colgarse el oro en el salto de potro, con un impecable salto que nos sorprendió por el alto nivel demostrado en su ejecución.
Obviamente, en aquel pequeño país, se desató la "Yulomanía" tal como lo reseñan los despachos noticiosos. Lo remarcable de éste hito es haber irrumpido en un deporte dominado a placer por las gigantes potencias deportivas. El que un país no alineado, logre colocar a un atleta en el podio, es señal de una proeza increíble. Pero si además, el deportista proviene de un país pobre, la dimensión de lo logrado se convierte en leyenda. Y esto habla mucho de cómo las brechas entre hombres/mujeres, disciplinas y nacionalidades se han ido cerrando. Y esto es lo que ha allanado el camino a la gloria, para estos deportistas espectaculares.
