Después de esa derrota, esperaba ver a un Real Madrid con ataques muy agresivos e intensos en su próximo partido. Claramente necesitaban una victoria para tener algún tipo de impulso emocional y también para mejorar su confianza. Antes de este partido, el Real Madrid estaba en muy buena posición en LaLiga donde ocupa la primera posición, y en la Champions League está en la segunda posición pero con altas posibilidades de conseguir la primera posición en los próximos partidos. Entonces, no es que el Real Madrid fuera completamente horrible antes de este partido, estaban bien en el sentido general.
El Espanyol, en cambio, es un equipo más reducido. En su mayor parte son un sólido equipo de primera división, pero rara vez participan en competiciones europeas como la Champions League o la Europa League. Una posición típica en la tabla para el Espanyol es alrededor de la posición # 10. No son los peores pero tampoco los mejores. Benzema y Vinicius son los 2 principales atacantes del Real Madrid esta temporada, y hasta ahora han marcado un buen número de goles, pero parece que atraviesan una etapa de mala actuación. Otros jugadores de ataque como Hazard y Rodrygo son aún menos productivos, por lo que me parece que el Real Madrid vuelve a sufrir la falta de un goleador de talla mundial. No olvidemos que intentaron fichar a Mbappé este verano pero al final fracasaron.
Esta falta de creatividad de ataque fue muy notoria en la primera mitad, así que todavía no estaba seguro de si era simplemente mala suerte o si realmente estaban pasando por un período de bajo rendimiento.
Por si fuera poco el tema ofensivo, el Real Madrid también está teniendo problemas en la defensa y eso viene sucediendo desde el comienzo de la temporada. Este equipo está recibiendo alrededor de 1 gol por partido en promedio, y eso es demasiado para un equipo que aspira a ser campeón. La defensa cambió mucho en comparación con la temporada pasada porque ahora los principales defensas centrales no son Varane y Ramos, sino Militao y Alaba, por lo que esto podría ser un problema temporal y una vez que los nuevos defensores se acostumbren, el rendimiento defensivo podría mejorar, pero a medida que este problema no se resuelva, seguirá siendo preocupante. Estos problemas defensivos fueron el principal motivo del gol del Espanyol en torno al minuto 17. El Real Madrid, a pesar de ser el equipo dominante, no pudo detener una jugada de ataque desde su lado izquierdo del campo, lado en el que defendían Alaba y Nacho. La segunda parte arrancó con un cambio importante en el Real Madrid. Camavinga fue enviado a la banca, lo que podría haber sido una elección inteligente porque tenía una tarjeta amarilla y mostraba signos de frustración que podrían haber hecho que finalmente recibiera una tarjeta roja. A cambio de Camavinga, Rodrygo fue enviado al campo, este jugador es un extremo brasileño talentoso con mucho potencial para convertirse en una gran estrella, aunque en lo que va de temporada solo ha marcado 1 gol.
Al inicio de la segunda parte, Militao dio su segundo cabezazo del partido, y casi se fue dentro de la red. La jugada más peligrosa para el Real Madrid hasta ese momento fue el cabezazo de Militao y eso dice mucho de su falta de creatividad y eficacia a la hora de atacar.
Hacia el minuto 60, Aleix Vidal hizo una gran jugada individual que terminó con el segundo gol del Espanyol. Rápidamente supera a Modric desde el centro del campo y cuando Nacho va a detenerlo, Vidal pasa el balón entre las piernas de Nacho y sigue corriendo directo hacia el portero, demostrando lo débil que es la defensa del Real Madrid. Una vez que estuvo delante del portero hizo un buen disparo y entró. Un gran gol de Vidal y fue increíble ver con qué facilidad desbarataba todo el sistema defensivo del Real Madrid con tan solo correr directo hacia el portero.
Modric y Kroos abandonaron el terreno de juego justo después del gol, y Casemiro y Jovic entraron al terreno de juego. Fueron sustituciones muy agresivas porque Jovic es delantero y faltaban 30 minutos por jugar. A partir de ese momento, el Real Madrid solo se centró en el ataque y estaba desesperado por marcar lo más rápido posible. Irónicamente, el Espanyol estuvo a punto de marcar el tercero, pero lo falló por pocos centímetros.

Inmediatamente después del gol, Vinicius salió y Hazard entró al campo.
Siguen atacando sin parar y alrededor de los 10 minutos después del primer gol marcan otro pero éste también se anula gracias a un fuera de juego de Benzema. Este gol inválido fue marcado por Hazard y hubiera sido un gol muy bonito. Estoy seguro de que tener tantos goles inválidos cuando se está perdiendo debe ser extremadamente frustrante para cualquier equipo.
El reloj siguió avanzando y el Real Madrid simplemente no pudo marcar su segundo gol válido. Alaba intentó un par de tiros libres y hubo muchos jugadores haciendo disparos pero nadie pudo anotar. Al final, creo que merecieron al menos empatar el partido pero una vez más, por segundo partido consecutivo, sufren una derrota por 2-1 ante un rival menor pese a hacer más del doble de tiros. Estos resultados deberían ser muy preocupantes para el equipo, y es mejor que esta pequeña crisis se resuelva a corto plazo, de lo contrario, probablemente Ancelotti tendrá problemas para mantener su puesto de entrenador.

En las próximas 2 semanas, solo habrá partidos con selecciones nacionales y, como mencioné en el artículo anterior, no estoy seguro de ver esos partidos. Probablemente intentaré ver el que tenga los mejores equipos, pero aún no lo he decidido.

After that defeat, I expected to see a Real Madrid with very aggressive and intensive attacks in their next match. So, it is not like Real Madrid was completely horrible before this match, they were OK in the general sense.
Espanyol, on the other hand, is a smaller team. They are for the most part a solid first division team, but they rarely participate in European competitions such as the Champions League or the Europa League. A typical position in the table for Espanyol is around position #10. They aren't the worst ones but also not the best ones. 2 years ago, after 26 years playing on the first division they descended to the second division, but they quickly returned to the first division this season which is where they belong.
I liked the fact Ancelotti decided to use Alaba as a left-back and Nacho as a central defender. He recently used them the other way around which didn't make sense because the left-back is the most uncomfortable position for Nacho, while Alaba began his career as a left-back and then he became a central defender. So if those 2 need to play in those positions, the natural decision would be to put Alaba as a left-back and Nacho as a central defender. I also liked seeing Kroos and Modric playing together after many months. The other midfielder was Valverde, who has been very solid throughout this season, and the newly arrived Camavinga who is also proving his worth.
Playing with 4 midfielders usually means the team is going to have more control but less explosive attacking plays. Maybe Ancelotti didn't want to risk too much after the recent defeat and decided to use a lineup that could allow his team to have complete control and reduce the chances of suffering goals. However, this decision didn't work in the end.
How was the match?
Real Madrid began the match by being in complete control of the ball as expected. The midfielders did a great job imposing themselves and allowed their team to be the dominant one. However, there is a worrisome observation that I have noticed in the past couple of matches. Real Madrid's effectiveness and creativity when attacking have been decreasing. The midfielders are doing a good job, for the most part, the problem is with the attacking players that are having problems when properly executing and finishing the attacking plays.
Benzema and Vinicius are the 2 main attacking players of Real Madrid this season, and they have scored a good number of goals so far, but they appear to be going through a period of poor performance. Other attacking players such as Hazard and Rodrygo are even less productive, so it seems to me that Real Madrid is once again, suffering the lack of a world-class goalscorer. Let's not forget they tried to sign Mbappe this summer but ultimately they failed.
This lack of attacking creativity was very noticeable in the first half, so I was still not sure if this was simply bad luck or if they are really going through a period of low performance.
If the attacking issue wasn't enough, Real Madrid is also having problems in the defense and this has been happening since the beginning of the season. This team is receiving about 1 goal per match on average, and that's too high for a team that aspires to be champions. The defense changed a lot compared to last season because now the main central defenders aren't Varane and Ramos but Militao and Alaba, so this might be a temporary problem and once the new defenders get used to each other the defensive performance could improve but as long as this issue doesn't get solved this will continue to be worrisome. Real Madrid needs a more solid defense if they want to have a good season.
These defensive issues were the main reason for Espanyol's goal around the 17-minute mark. Real Madrid despite being the dominant team, wasn't able to stop an attacking play from their left side of the pitch, the side where Alaba and Nacho were defending. Embarba crossed the ball into the area, where Raul de Tomas (RDT) was faster than Vazquez and touched the ball around 2 meters from the goal line, everything was very quick and the goalkeeper could do nothing to stop the shot.
I believe Alaba shouldn't have allowed that cross into the area to happen, and then, Vazquez should have been faster than RDT and kick that ball out. Any team can score goals against this Real Madrid, and if their attacking players aren't very effective, then they have a good chance of defeating them.
The left-back position in Real Madrid was occupied by Mendy last season, but he hasn't recovered yet from an injury and that's why Real Madrid is having so many issues in that zone. Maybe when Mendy finally recovers these issues will be solved but only time will tell. Right now, it is very clear Real Madrid is weak on the defensive side, they have accumulated so many victories because of the huge amount of goals they have scored, but now with low performance in the attack, they are having many troubles winning the matches.
The first half ended with Real Madrid still controlling the ball but without creating many dangerous attacking plays. At least in the previous match against Sheriff they attacked a lot and simply missed the shots, but this time they weren't even creating good attacks.
The second half started with an important change in Real Madrid. Camavinga was sent to the bench which might have been a smart choice because he had a yellow card and was showing signs of frustrations that could have caused him to eventually receive a red card. In exchange for Camavinga, Rodrygo was sent to the pitch, this player is a talented Brazilian winger with a lot of potential to become a big star, although so far in this season he has only scored 1 goal.
At the beginning of the second half, Militao gave his second header of the match, and it almost went inside the net. The most dangerous play for Real Madrid so far was that Militao’s header and this says a lot about their lack of creativity and effectiveness when attacking.
Around the 60 minute mark, Aleix Vidal did a terrific individual play that ended in Espanyol’s second goal. He quickly outruns Modric from the midfield and when Nacho goes to stop him, Vidal passes the ball between Nacho’s legs and continues to run straight towards the goalkeeper, proving how weak Real Madrid's defense really is. Once he was in front of the goalkeeper he did a proper shot and it went in. A great goal for Vidal and it was incredible to see how easily he disrupted the entire defensive system of Real Madrid just by simply running straight towards the goalkeeper.
Modric and Kroos left the pitch right after the goal, and Casemiro and Jovic went inside the pitch. These were very aggressive substitutions because Jovic is a striker and there were 30 minutes still to play. From that moment on, Real Madrid only focused on the attack and they were desperate to score as quickly as they could. Ironically, Espanyol almost scored their third one but missed it by mere centimeters.
Eventually, Espanyol stopped attacking and began to focus only on defending their 2 goal advantage. Real Madrid was cornering them and their attacks were getting more and more dangerous with each passing minute. So much so, that around the 66-minute mark Benzema scores a great goal but it wasn't a valid one due to an offside. However, this proved Real Madrid was getting closer and closer and their first goal would be only a matter of minutes.
It wasn't until the 71-minute mark when Real Madrid finally scored their first valid goal. It was Benzema as usual, and he did a great individual play around the border of the area where he dodged a couple of rival players and managed to make a great shot that went inside the net. Since there were still around 20 minutes left to play, this gave Real Madrid big chances of tying the match and maybe even winning the match. Right after the goal, Vinicius went out and Hazard went inside the pitch.
They continue to attack without stopping and around 10 minutes after the first goal, they scored another one but this one also gets invalidated thanks to an offside by Benzema. This invalid goal was scored by Hazard and it would have been a very beautiful one. I am sure having so many invalid goals when you are losing must be extremely frustrating for any team.
The clock continued to tick away the remaining minutes, and Real Madrid simply couldn't score their second valid goal. Alaba attempted a couple of free kicks, and there were many players shooting the ball but no one could score. In the end, I believe they deserved at least to tie the match but once again, for the second consecutive match, they suffer a 2-1 defeat against a lesser rival despite doing more than double the shots. These results should be very worrisome for the team, and this small crisis better get solved in the short term, otherwise, Ancelotti will probably have issues keeping his job as a coach.
What's next?
In the next 2 weeks, there will only be matches with national selections, and as mentioned in the previous article, I am not sure if I will be watching those matches. I will probably try to watch the one with the best teams but haven't decided on this yet.
