WATP #15 Feature - Meet Jaynelyn The Stay at Home Mum

Hello #Hive!

I'm sorry for the late post. I usually go around looking for someone on Monday, so that I can post the new feature on Tuesday morning. However, it wasn't possible this week as we had a bit of a storm around South Cebu yesterday. With these kind of weather conditions, I preferred staying at home.

For the 15th edition of #WhoAreTheyPhilippines, we are going back to the town of Alcantara.

Since I had some work this morning, I was only available this afternoon to go around looking for the next WATP feature. At around 2pm I took my scooter and decided to drive on the back roads of Alcantara. I'm pretty sure I have now driven on almost every road within the surrounding municipalities, but today, I was able to find one which I had not traveled before.

I followed it for a while going up towards the mountain until I noticed a woman sitting outside on a bench with 2 kids. She was home-schooling the children.

I stopped by and started conversing with her. Luckily for me she spoke good English and after I explained the reason I was there she agreed to be interviewed and be WATP's 15th feature.

This is how I met Jaynelyn.

Who is Jaynelyn

Jaynelyn is a 30 year old woman who was born and raised in Barangay Lawaan in Alcantara. She lives there with her partner and their 3 children aged 9, 5 and 2.

She doesn't have work and spends her time at home taking care of the kids and home-schooling them between house chores. Her partner on the other hand is currently living in Cebu city where he is working. He comes back on weekends only.

Jaynelyn is from a big family and has 7 siblings. One of her sisters was present during the interview but they did say that they don't usually see each other very often.

Her corn field

When she is not busy with the house or the kids, she spends some time gardening, growing plants and farming, growing a few vegetables and corn for their own food consumption.

Just like a lot of the people featured by WATP, she's contented with what she has and her only dream in life is for her kids to be happy and healthy. She hopes to be able to provide them with a good education so that they have better chances in finding a job when they are older.

She sometimes listens to music or sings a bit of karaoke to relax and to take her mind away for a while.

Her house in the center and the kitchen on the right.

The current pandemic situation affected her family. From February until a few weeks ago, she was living alone in the house with her kids while her partner was with his family in Samar (another island of the Philippines). He was there to work on the family farm and to be able to earn some money harvesting rice and corn. He would then send some of that money over to Jaynelyn so that she and the kids could survive.

A couple of weeks ago, the company for which her partner was working before the pandemic contacted him and asked him to come back to work. This is good news for them as it means they can have a more regular income but it also means that they only see each other on weekends.

Her kitchen

As you can see on the pictures Jaynelyn and her family live a very simple life in a tiny house with 4 rudimentary walls and a roof over their head. Their kitchen is a makeshift shed outside the house. She doesn't have an electric or gas stove like most of us do and instead chops some wood and makes a fire to heat up her pan.

The black jerrycans you can see on some of the pictures are to store water as they don't have running water. They do have a faucet with water from the mountain close to their house but very often it is dry and so she then has to walk a few kilometers to go fetch some. Hence the reason they try to store as much as they can when the faucet close to the house is running.

Her small garden. At the moment she only has okra (ladies fingers).

This is it for Jaynelyn's feature. To contribute to her reward, please upvote this post and share it with your followers by reblogging it.

Thank you all again for your support and see you next week for another feature.

What is #WhoAreTheyPhilippines?

#WhoAreTheyPhilippines is a project which aims at sharing Hive cryptocurrency rewards with Filipinos. Every week a person within the Philippines is randomly selected. Our interviewer asks him/her some questions and takes a few pictures before writing a feature and posting it on the Hive PH Community. After 7 days, when the author reward can be claimed, the HBD payout amount along with some contributions from fellow Hivers are converted to the local currency (PHP). Our interviewer then makes his way back to this person and hands over the total amount to him/her.

We are very thankful to all of you for your support, upvotes and contributions. We are also glad this initiative is well received.
