The “Holy kozunak” beer. Now that’s weird…

Well, this is for sure weird! The beer is called Holy Kozunak, and for those who don’t know Bulgarian, Kozunak is a type of Easter bread, which is prepared for the celebration in Bulgaria, Greece and other Balkan countries. Now, imagine putting this pastry in a beer. You cannot, yeah? Neither do I!

The beer is from the same collection as the beer from my previous post, and is brewed by Sofia Electric Brewery. It’s said to be a sour, just like the “Pie Strings Theory” and the label is literally the same, excluding the graphic image in the center, which now features a Kozunak with a pair of “Holy hands” 😁

Given the fact the other beer was very good and fresh, I expected this one to be also very good and summer one. The beer is brewed with real Easter bread, at least that’s what they state in the ingredients list on the label.

In the glass the beer is orange and relatively clear looking, the foam is disappearing almost instantly, just like with the Pie Strings Theory. Again, this is very common for the lacto fermented beers. In the nose I can smell the sourness, but I can’t experience any “Kozunak” scents. After tasting it, sourness kicks in, but it’s rapidly being balanced with some sweetness and a relative thick body, which is a bit unusual for a sour beer. In the aftertaste, I can find the typical “Kozunak” flavorings, such as vanilla and some dried fruits. Some bread-like flavor is forming. It’s not overwhelming, or very intensive, but it’s there, as a nice touch and finishes the overall perception of the beer.

Overall, this was a very nice beer, and definitely goes in a warmer spring-summer days. Although the taste was very good and balanced, again, I prefer having the Pie Strings Theory beer with more intensive pastry taste. I can go without a dessert, after a nice meal, if I have one of these beers.

That’s for today, wish you a nice week and many good beers!
Cheers! 🍻
