Tarde de música improvisada en el Café Arte Lucía's/ Improvised musical afternoon at the Café Arte Lucía's

¡Hola, comunidad!

Hello, community! From July 3rd to 9th, the Festival del Caribe (Caribbean Festival), also known as the Fiesta del Fuego (Festival of Fire), took place—one of the largest and most anticipated events in my city. However, due to the deep economic and migratory crisis affecting my country, the festival has been declining in quality, the number of participating countries, and the size of delegations for some time now. It’s a sad situation.

Nevertheless, there were pleasant surprises. One of them occurred at Allegro, a sociocultural project that transformed the magnificent, old, and famous Oriente cinema (which had become uninhabitable and was filled with debris) into its headquarters. The space includes a café called Arte Lucía’s and a terrace that doubles as a discotheque. Both spaces were made available for the festival.

One afternoon, at the Arte Lucía's café, the saxophonist Lázaro settled in, a very young musician who delighted us with covers of various songs and in general, a pleasant moment. The audience, though small, was enjoying themselves. However, the artists who were supposed to perform next were nowhere to be found.

Lázaro held on as best he could, but it was clear that those individuals were not going to show up. Those of us who were aware of the organization were a bit disappointed, but we decided to make up for it with good recorded music that followed the previous theme, coffee, and a familiar and intimate atmosphere.

Then, out of nowhere, Ivette arrives. An artist from the capital who had been informed that she was supposed to perform at Allegro. The organizers had no idea! Of course, we welcomed her, set up her piano, and prepared to listen. She was amazing!

Extraordinary voice, talented pianist. After a couple of songs, she suggested that Lázaro join her with the saxophone and improvise. It was perfect. The overall impression was that if they had rehearsed, it wouldn’t have been as good.

When they finally stepped off the stage, we invited them to our table. Roger, a Fantasy writer and video game developer, had joined us. Alexander, an actor and director from Allegro, was also there, along with me, a writer. We had a lengthy conversation, and Ivette invited Lázaro to continue playing with her.

The promise was fulfilled: both musicians continued performing together on other stages in the city, and it seems they’ve formed a strong alliance.

All because of an accidental encounter in a café.
