In addition to the daily chores, during the month of December I was busy with some household chores that not everyone does and not everyone knows how to do. I am talking about repairs.
I don't consider myself an expert, but I do know how to do many things that are necessary to carry out these repairs, so I took a few hours out of my days to perform these tasks slowly but surely.
You see, since I came to this house 3 years ago, I have been doing repairs over and over again. Money is not always enough and sometimes you only have just enough for basic necessities, such as food and utilities; however, I have done these repairs in parts...

Además de las labores diarias, durante el mes de diciembre me ocupé en ciertas labores del hogar que no todos suelen hacer y no todos saben hacer. Les hablo de las reparaciones.
No me considero un experto, pero sí se hacer muchas cosas que son necesarias para llevar a cabo estas reparaciones, así que tomé algunas horas de mis días, para realizar estas labores de manera lenta pero segura.
Verán, desde que llegué a esta casa, hace 3 años, he estado haciendo reparaciones una y otra vez. El dinero no siempre alcanza y a veces se cuenta solo con lo justo para las necesidades básicas, como alimentación y servicios; sin embargo, he hecho estas reparaciones por partes...
For example, during the first year I repaired electricity and plumbing, as well as other things so that this house would become a decent home. The second year I just fixed the roof, because it was made of wood and everything that involves wood is quite expensive. I also bought lamps and things like that to beautify the home.
This third year I decided to repair something that had been causing a lot of problems at home, water leaks. I should clarify that in my town it rains a lot during the rainy season, so houses with concrete roofs must be protected to avoid leaks. In my case, only one part of the house has a concrete roof, the rest has wooden columns and tiles.
It has been a very long time since these repairs were done here, so the structure had deteriorated a lot, I will explain later.
Por ejemplo, durante el primer año reparé electricidad y cañería, además de otras cosas para que esta casa se convirtiera en un hogar digno. El segundo año solo me dediqué a arreglar el techo, pues era de madera y todo lo que involucra madera es bastante costoso. También me dediqué a comprar lámparas y cosas así para embellecer el hogar.
Este tercer año decidí reparar algo que había estado causando muchos problemas en casa, filtraciones de agua. Debo aclararles que en mi pueblo llueve demasiado durante la temporada de lluvia, así que las casas con techo de concreto deben ser protegidas para evitar filtraciones. En mi caso, solo una parte de la casa tiene techo de concreto, el resto tiene columnas de madera y tejas.
Desde hace muchísimo tiempo no se hacían estas reparaciones aquí, así que la estructura se había deteriorado bastante, ya les explicaré más adelante.

Hands on work
Little by little I began to buy the materials I would need to fix some of the outlets, to paint and to fix the leaks that were there.
As soon as I had all the materials on hand I began to make the repairs.
One of the first things I did, as I also planned to paint, was to remove the old paint from the walls. There were leaks and moisture damage in different parts of the house, so first I removed the paint to take care of it step by step.
Manos a la obra
Poco a poco comencé a comprar los materiales que necesitaría para arreglar algunos enchufes, para pintar y para arreglar las mismas filtraciones que había.
Tan pronto tuve todos los materiales a la mano comencé a hacer las reparaciones.
Una de las primeras cosas que hice, pues también tenía pensado pintar, fue retirar la pintura vieja de las paredes. Había filtraciones y daño por humedad en distintas partes de la casa, así que primero retiré la pintura para ocuparme paso a paso de este tema.

As I told you, only one part of my house has a concrete roof, this is the area affected by water and humidity. So I concentrated on these areas to quickly solve this problem. So I removed all the old paint from the living room area and the front of the house.
You may see that it was all very fast, but this job took me about a week, because it was not something I did all day but a couple of hours each day. Plus I had to break concrete to get to the source of certain leaks.
There were days when I finished working at night and I was so tired that I just laid down on the floor and slept until the next day, no dinner or anything. It was not an easy job and I was not used to it either.
Como ya les dije, solo una parte de mi casa tiene techo de concreto, esta es la zona afectada por el agua y la humedad. Así que me concentré en estas áreas para resolver rápido este problema. Fue así como retiré toda la pintura vieja del área de la sala y el frente de la casa.
Quizás ustedes vean que todo fue muy rápido, pero este trabajo me llevó aproximadamente una semana, pues no era algo que hacía durante todo el día sino un par de horas cada día. Además de que tuve que romper concreto para llegar al origen de ciertas filtraciones.
Había días en los que terminaba de trabajar en la noche y quedaba tan cansado que simplemente me acostaba en el suelo y me dormía hasta el día siguiente, sin cenar ni nada. No era un trabajo fácil y tampoco estaba acostumbrado a hacerlo.

Unforeseen
On the other hand, something that took me by surprise was that one of the locks of a gate at the entrance was damaged. Out of the blue, it stopped working and I had to remove it with a sledgehammer.
I took it to the locksmith and the repair cost practically the same as a new lock, so I decided to buy a new one since I was going to spend the same.
Imprevisto
Por otra parte, algo que me tomó por sorpresa fue que se dañó una de las cerraduras de una reja de la entrada. De la nada dejó de funcionar y tuve que retirarla a los golpes.
La llevé al cerrajero y la reparación costaba prácticamente lo mismo que una cerradura nueva, así que decidí comprar una nueva ya que iba a gastar lo mismo.

The next day I went to find a friend who was going to help me that week to fix some things. Luckily he knew about blacksmithing, so he brought his welding machine to fix that problem and another one I had on another fence in the front.
At that time the house was a mess. In the photo below you can see some of the tools we had to do all the repairs.
Al día siguiente fui a buscar a un amigo que iba a ayudarme esa semana a arreglar algunas cosas. Por suerte sabe de herrería, así que trajo su máquina de soldar para arreglarme ese problema y uno más que tenía en otra reja del frente.
En esos tiempos la casa estaba hecha un desastre. En la foto de abajo pueden ver algunas herramientas que teníamos para hacer todas las reparaciones.
After a while and helping him as best I could, my friend managed to weld the lock in place. One unforeseen event solved.
Después de un rato y ayudándolo como pude, mi amigo logró soldar la cerradura en su lugar. Un imprevisto resuelto.

Water Leaks
Okay, time for the heavy lifting. At this point I didn't manage to take too many pictures of the job because I had my hands full of dust, concrete and even liquid asphalt, but I'll tell you what I did accompanied by a couple of pictures of the process.
You see, when I went up to the roof of the house I realized what a leakage problem it had. There were several cracks where water was seeping through, they were clearly visible.
With the help of a chisel and a grinder I managed to uncover enough of these cracks to cover them with a hard concrete mixture used for exteriors.
Filtraciones
Bien, hora del trabajo pesado. En este punto no logré tomar demasiadas fotos del trabajo porque tenía las manos ocupadas, llenas de polvo, concreto e incluso asfalto líquido, pero les contaré lo que hice acompañado de un par de fotos del proceso.
Verán, cuando subí al techo de la casa me di cuenta del problema de filtraciones que tenía. Había varias grietas por donde el agua se estaba filtrado, se veían claramente.
Con ayuda de un cincel y un esmeril logré descubrir lo suficiente estas grietas para cubrirlas con una mezcla dura de concreto que se usa para exteriores.
The previous owners of the house had made a sort of concrete bond between the shingles and the concrete slab, but it was already very worn so I removed it and redid it. This worked, it just wasn't done right.
In addition, the slab had little fall and it made a water well, so I made some channels where the water could circulate better. I didn't manage to take many pictures of this either.
Los dueños anteriores de la casa habían hecho una suerte de unión de concreto entre las tejas y la placa de concreto, pero ya estaba muy gastada así que la retiré y la volví a hacer. Esto funcionaba, solo que no estaba bien hecho.
Además, la placa tenía poca caída y se hacía un pozo de agua, así que le hice unas canales por donde podría circular mejor el agua. De esto tampoco logré tomar muchas fotos.
After all this I finally applied the liquid asphalt coating. This would be enough to solve the problem....
Después de todo esto finalmente le apliqué la cubierta de asfalto líquido. Con esto sería suficiente para resolver el problema...

Damages
After resolving the leaks, I started repairing the damage I had done to the infrastructure.
The friend who fixed the lock also knows how to work on these things, so he helped me with part of the plate. Between the two of us we managed to fix this in a little over half a day.

Después de resolver las filtraciones, comencé a reparar el daño que había hecho en la infraestructura.
El amigo que arregló la cerradura también sabe trabajar de estas cosas, así que me ayudó con parte de la placa. Entre los dos logramos arreglar esto en poco más de medio día.

At this point, many weeks had already passed, it was already very close to the end of the year; in fact, that same week would be December 31st so imagine all the work I had done.
But well, at that point I had managed to repair all the leaks so it was time to paint and cover all the ugly and gray work that had been left.
I painted white, just like before and it took me a little more than 3 days to paint the front of the house only.
Llegados a este punto, ya habían pasado muchas semanas, ya estaba muy cerca el fin de año; de hecho, esa misma semana sería 31 de Diciembre así que imagínense todo lo que había trabajado.
Pero bueno, ya en ese punto había logrado reparar todas las filtraciones así que llegó la hora de pintar y cubrir todo lo feo y la obra gris que había quedado.
Pinté de blanco, tal como antes y la verdad me llevó poco más de 3 días pintar el frente de la casa solamente.

Paint & clean
I almost always painted too early in the morning or too late at night, as I had other occupations during the day and could not concentrate completely on painting.
Luckily, before December 31, a friend of mine came to help me paint and clean for a couple of nights and between the two of us we managed to finish this arduous task.
Pintar y limpiar
Casi siempre pintaba muy de mañana o muy de noche, pues tenía otras ocupaciones durante el día y no podía concentrarme por completo en pintar.
Por suerte, antes del 31 de diciembre una amiga vino a ayudarme a pintar y limpiar durante un par de noches y entre los dos logramos terminar esta ardua labor.

In the photos you can see that even at night I was working, because this was the time I had available for this purpose, so I tried to make the most of the time available.
However, I managed to finish everything on time and the result was great. That same night that I finished painting, my friend helped me clean up and between the two of us we left the front clean, white and shiny.
En las fotos se aprecia que hasta en la noche estaba trabajando, porque este era el horario que tenía disponible para este propósito, así que procuraba aprovechar el tiempo disponible al máximo.
Sin embargo, logré terminar todo a tiempo y el resultado quedó genial. Esa misma noche que terminé de pintar, mi amiga me ayudó a limpiar y entre los dos dejamos el frente limpio, blanco y resplandeciente.

Finishing...
The next day I took care of arranging this front, cleaning the chairs and bringing the plants to their place.

Ya al día siguiente yo me ocupé de arreglar este frente, de limpiar las sillas y de traer las plantas a su lugar.

The last thing I did was to put the letters of the little house back in place. I had removed them because I was going to paint and didn't want them to stain, so when I finished I put them back on.
Lo último que hice fue colocar las letras de la casita en su lugar. Las había retirado porque iba a pintar y no quería que se mancharan, por eso cuando terminé las volví a colocar.
To fix them in place I used ramplug and long screws, also golden like the letters.
Para fijarlas en su sitio utilicé ramplug y tornillos largos, dorados también como las letras.

This is how the repairs were finished last year. So far this year I continue with the repairs, now in the living room, the bedroom and other areas, like the patio, but I'm going step by step because I'm doing them alone.
But it's like they say, little by little and with time a lot will be done, so by dedicating a couple of hours to these repairs every day at some point I'll finish...
De esta manera terminaron las reparaciones durante el año pasado. En lo que va de año sigo con las reparaciones, ahora en la sala, la habitación y otras áreas, como el patio, pero voy paso a paso porque estoy haciéndolas solo.
Pero es como dicen, poco a lo poco y con el tiempo se hará mucho, así que dedicando un par de horas a estas reparaciones todos los dias en algún momento terminaré...
