The Mushroom House (aka Bell Pavilion House) is one of many iconic places in San Diego. It was designed by Dale Naegle, and built in the late 1960's for Sam Bell, owner of Bell's Potato Chips and General Mills. Sam Bell already owned a house on top of the cliff, that included the 300ft cliff, and decided to build a guest house that had privacy and great ocean views. He found that at the beach below. That part of the beach is almost a private beach, it can only be accessible by foot in low tides. His request was to build a house that could withstand rockslides, earthquakes and waves. To get there they had to build a tramway in the very steep cliffs to connect the main house to the guest house.
The house is located at the south end of Blacks Beach, very close to La Jolla Shores. The name Mushroom House came from local surfers that thought this weird looking house looked like a fungus.

A Mushroom House (também conhecida como Bell Pavilion House) é um dos muitos lugares icônicos de San Diego. Ela foi projetada por Dale Naegle e construída no final da década de 1960 para Sam Bell, proprietário da Bell's Potato Chips e da General Mills. Sam Bell já possuía uma casa no topo do penhasco, que incluía o penhasco de 100 metros, e decidiu construir uma casa de hóspedes que tivesse privacidade e excelentes vistas para o oceano. Ele encontrou isso na praia abaixo. Essa parte da praia é quase uma praia particular, só pode ser acessada a pé nas marés baixas. Can you imagine going down that tramway? Looks super dangerous. I heard the tram hasn't operated in a long time. There are some gossips that today the house is owned by UCSD, and sometimes used by professors and administrators. There are other gossips saying it is owned by a philanthropist from San Diego. Looking from outside, looks abandoned because of all the graffiti.
To get there I parked on La Jolla Farms Rd, and walked down Blacks Beach Trail. This trail is paved, but only service vehicles can access. At the bottom of the trail there are some restrooms, and the access to the beach. From there you can walk down the beach to the Mushroom House. As you can see in the next pictures.

Já imaginou descer por esse bonde? Parece muito perigoso. Ouvi dizer que o bonde não funciona há muito tempo. Há alguns boatos de que hoje a casa pertence à UCSD e, às vezes, é usado por professores e administradores. Outros boatos dizem que é propriedade de um filantropo de San Diego. Olhando de fora, parece abandonado por causa de todas do graffiti.
Para chegar lá, estacionei na La Jolla Farms Rd e caminhei pela Blacks Beach Trail. Essa trilha é pavimentada, mas somente veículos de serviço podem acessá-la. Na parte inferior da trilha, há alguns banheiros e o acesso à praia. De lá, você pode caminhar pela praia até a Mushroom House. Como voces podem ver nas próximas fotos.

I didn't want to fly north from that point because of the Torrey Pines Gliderport. There are usually hang glides and paraglides in that area, and flying a drone there sounds a bit too dangerous. On top of the cliff right next to where I took off there is a red flag to sign that it is the limit where the hang glides and paraglides can go. Check out the picture below, the only one in this post taken with my cellphone. That paraglider got me a bit nervous, I only saw him after I had my drone in the air, but I was in a safe spot, just a bit too close to the limit.

Eu não queria voar para o norte a partir desse ponto por causa do Torrey Pines Gliderport. Normalmente, há asas deltas e parapentes nessa área, e voar com um drone ali parece um pouco perigoso demais. No topo do penhasco, bem próximo de onde decolei, há uma bandeira vermelha para sinalizar que é o limite onde as asas delta e os parapentes podem ir. Veja a foto abaixo, a única deste post tirada com meu celular. Aquele parapente me deixou um pouco nervoso, só o vi depois que já estava com meu drone no ar, mas eu estava em um local seguro, apenas um pouco perto demais do limite.

Since I couldn't go further north, I decided to fly up high and try to get some shots from the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course. Another iconic spot in San Diego, that holds annually a PGA Tour edition and has held twice the US Open. I remember a while back, when I took pictures of the other side of Torrey Pines Beach, that @ksteem asked me about the golf course. I know these are a bit too far, but it gives a good idea of the location of the golf course. Check it out in the next pictures.

Como não podia voar mais ao norte, decidi voar alto e tentar tirar algumas fotos do famoso campo de golfe de Torrey Pines. Outro local icônico em San Diego, que recebe anualmente uma edição do PGA Tour e já sediou duas vezes o US Open. Lembro que, há algum tempo, quando tirei fotos do outro lado de Torrey Pines Beach, @ksteem me perguntou sobre o campo de golfe. Sei que essas fotos estão um pouco distantes, mas dão uma boa ideia da localização do campo de golfe. Dê uma olhada nas próximas fotos.
