Despite the exterior being very photogenic, soon after it was built in the 1930's it was considered one of the worst excesses of asylums in the era of lunacy reform. Nowadays, it is a modern psychiatric facility where a large amount of research is conducted.
Bethlem Museum of the Mind is a gallery housing a collection of artwork and exhibits created by patients of the hospital.
It was once called "a symbol for man's inhumanity to man, for callousness and cruelty." by a historian!
