En la etimología de la palabra religión podemos encontrar diferentes significados. Sin embargo, tanto en su acepción de “relegare”, como en “religio” o “religare”, subyace una idea común: la de formar grupos.
Y es que la religión es una expresión más de nuestra humana necesidad de estar juntos, y no solamente de estar juntos con cualquiera, que también lo podemos hacer, sino estar juntos con aquellos que se nos parezcan más, que es cuando realmente nos sentimos cómodos y hasta protegidos.
De manera que las religiones se han venido desarrollando por ese deseo de tener personas con las que compartir alguna idea común, la que en este caso sería la aceptación de la existencia de un “Creador”, “Divinidad”, o “Dios”.
Aún cuando fui criado en la creencia católica, en mi juventud me desligué de toda idea religiosa sin llegar a declararme agnóstico o ateo, simplemente me dio por no creer en nada.
Tal era mi obstinación en ese tema que cuando nacieron mis hijos mayores a ninguno los bauticé en los primeros años. Fue cuando ya estaban un poco grandes que por no seguir causándoles disgustos a las abuelas decidí complacerlas y los bauticé, de igual forma para complacerlas les hice cumplir con los rituales respectivos para la “Primera Comunión”.
Sin embargo, llegué a un momento de mi vida en que me empezaron a inquietar las preguntas que han estado con el hombre desde el inicio de los tiempos: ¿Quién soy…? ¿De dónde vengo…? ¿Qué hay después de la muerte…? Esos planteamientos me llegaron junto a una tendencia a maravillarme por toda la obra de la creación, por todo el mundo que me rodeaba. Desde entonces me volví a reconciliar con mis creencias religiosas, las que al parecer siempre estuvieron latentes en mí.
La expectativa del ser humano por lo sobrenatural ha estado desde el inicio de los tiempos. Nuestros más lejanos ancestros sintieron inquietudes de tipo espiritual, quizá por la incapacidad de poder explicar acontecimientos tan dramáticos como el nacimiento y la muerte.
A diferencia de las otras especies nuestra capacidad de razonamiento es capaz de llevarnos a interrogar no solo el mundo que nos rodea, sino la existencia misma. Son demasiadas las preguntas que no tienen respuestas cuando la mente se toma en serio el trabajo de pensar. Son demasiados los misterios que se nos abren al pensamiento cuando empezamos a observar atentamente cada detalle de la existencia.
Pienso que conjuntamente con nuestra capacidad de razonar y de poder articular lenguajes para comunicar las ideas, está también en nosotros una especie de naturaleza espiritual que nos permite tomar conciencia de nuestra pequeñez en el universo y, en consecuencia, la necesidad de pensar en la existencia de algo superior, que nos rebasa y nos trasciende en el tiempo.
Como somos seres espirituales es normal entonces que busquemos agruparnos con aquellos que compartan inquietudes similares y por allí debe andar el origen de las religiones, en esa humana necesidad de compartir lo que se siente y lo que se piensa.
Es verdad que muchas veces las religiones han servido para someter, perseguir y hasta para segar la vida de los otros, algo que no debería sorprendernos totalmente puesto que las religiones son formadas por seres humanos en los que habitan pasiones, deseos y la necesidad de poder.
No obstante, siempre lucirá como un contrasentido que ideas llamadas a dar respuestas a las necesidades espirituales del “Ser”, sirvan como punta de lanza para iniciar conflictos tendientes a someter y acallar a los que puedan pensar distinto. Pero eso es una consecuencia de continuar viendo al mundo según el espíritu de la “tribu”, el que parece estar inevitablemente ligado con el sectarismo y la exclusión.
Entre las preguntas generadoras que nos dejan los amigos de la iniciativa está: ¿Has pensado en un mundo sin religión?
No creo que en algún momento pueda desaparecer la necesidad religiosa. Es verdad que en nuestros días se le da mucha publicidad a las visiones agnósticas y ateas, e incluso compartirlas pareciera ser un indicio de estar a la moda. Sin embargo, las grandes religiones cuentan con miles de millones de seguidores.
Nuestro mundo apostó fuertemente a la razón y al conocimiento aportado por la ciencia para resolver los grandes problemas humanos. Sin embargo, ambas cartas se han mostrado insuficientes y en muchos casos han llevado a grandes fracasos. Es por eso que siguen creándose espacios para el desarrollo de la espiritualidad, bien sea en el marco de las religiones tradicionales, de otras nuevas, o de asumir la espiritualidad como un camino individual.
Sí creo que en algún momento llegue la necesidad de revisar muchas cosas al interior de las religiones; esto podrá facilitar, entre otras cosas, el tender puentes que amplíen la tolerancia y la convivencia entre todo tipo de creyentes. Pueda ser que las religiones abandonen el espíritu de sectas y de ese modo avancen en una valoración del "Otro", sencillamente por el hecho de ser “Humano”.

The expectation of the human being for the supernatural has been there since the beginning of time. Our most distant ancestors felt spiritual concerns, perhaps because of the inability to explain such dramatic events as birth and death.
Unlike other species, our reasoning capacity is capable of leading us to question not only the world around us, but existence itself. Too many questions remain unanswered when the mind takes seriously the work of thinking. Too many are the mysteries that open up to thought when we begin to observe attentively every detail of existence.
I think that together with our capacity to reason and to be able to articulate languages to communicate ideas, there is also in us a kind of spiritual nature that allows us to become aware of our smallness in the universe and, as a consequence, the need to think about the existence of something superior, that surpasses us and transcends us in time.
As we are spiritual beings it is normal then that we seek to group ourselves with those who share similar concerns and that must be the origin of religions, in that human need to share what we feel and what we think.
It is true that many times religions have served to subdue, persecute and even to cut down the lives of others, something that should not surprise us totally since religions are formed by human beings in whom passions, desires and the need for power dwell.
Nevertheless, it will always seem a contradiction that ideas called to give answers to the spiritual needs of the "Being" serve as a spearhead to initiate conflicts tending to subdue and silence those who may think differently. But this is a consequence of continuing to see the world according to the spirit of the "tribe", which seems to be inevitably linked to sectarianism and exclusion.
Among the generative questions that the friends of the initiative leave us with is: Have you ever thought of a world without religion?
I do not believe that at some point in time the need for religion will disappear. It is true that nowadays agnostic and atheist visions are given a lot of publicity, and even sharing them seems to be a sign of being fashionable. However, the great religions have billions of followers.
Our world bet heavily on reason and the knowledge provided by science to solve the great human problems. However, both cards have proven to be insufficient and in many cases have led to great failures. That is why spaces continue to be created for the development of spirituality, whether in the framework of traditional religions, new ones, or assuming spirituality as an individual path.
I do believe that at some point there will be a need to review many things within religions; this may facilitate, among other things, the building of bridges that broaden tolerance and coexistence among all types of believers. It may be that religions abandon the spirit of sects and thus advance in a valuation of the other, simply for the fact of being "Human".
