One of the Toughest boss in Hollow Knight - SOUL MASTER

Hello and Welcome back to my blog!

I was not going to share it but somehow I couldn't resist sharing one of the Epic Boss Fights from Hollow Knight, a game with amazing lore, incredible music and a plethora of enemies. There are a lot of sections in this 2D action-adventure Castlevania-type game with an interconnected world of underground ancient cities and a lot of mysteries to solve. There are a lot of mini-bosses and bosses in this game.

I would love to share a specific one which surprised me and gave me a really tough time. Shout out to this GamingPhotography community and the weekly contests, this week's contest is to share Epic Boss Fights and there are still a few hours left to share your entry. Here is the contest post link.. I am just sharing an example as I am not competing in this one.

Soul Master - Leader of the Soul Sanctum

You will encounter this boss in the 'Soul Sanctum' part of Hallownest kingdom, just northwest of the City of Tears.

Soul Master tried to harness the 'soul', the very essence that drives all the living creatures in the Hallownest and wanted to achieve immortality by doing his experiments with souls.

When the Infection started, he concluded that Soul, the energy animating bugs and beasts alike, was the solution to cure their mind of this plague.[5] He refused to listen to the Pale King opposing his work and failed to realise that his own Infected mind was influencing him.

The souls he collected and consumed gave him some unique powers which made this bug very powerful.

Fighting him is no easy deal, he has a lot of attacks. He was mostly using orbs of concentrated souls towards the knight. One of his powerful attacks is a big slam on the ground causing a shockwave which hurts you.

Another interesting attack type is the flotating orbs that move around the Soul Master as he floats around the arena from right to left or left to right. We have to carefully dodge these orbs and him at the same time.

The orbs that he throws at us also follow us like a guided missile for a bit before vanishing in thin air. It should be obvious that you take damage if you touch any of the orbs or the Soul Master itself.

And to make things worse, he randomly teleports from one side of the arena to the other.

And sometimes, it just dashes the entire length of the arena which you have to carefully dodge by timing your jump perfectly or using your nail downwards to hit it at the perfect time when it is about to touch you.

It gets all squishy and deflated when you defeat it!

This drops a new movement ability, the 'desolate dive'. You can jump into it to absorb it...

BUT WAIT! It is not over! He comes back for phase 2!!

When you think it is over the soul master reappears slamming the floor underneath your feet and dropping both of you to the level below.

In this next phase, his attacks become faster and you have less time to react now. And if you die (you will), you will be spawning back to the bench which is far away into the City of Tear, this is another aspect of this boss fight which makes it even tougher. Normally, you get a save point just before the boss level but in this case, you have to clear the level again and kill a lot of smaller enemies and only then you will get to retry it.

Fortunately, he doesn't have a lot of health in that second phase or it would take so many tries.

It is an amazing feeling when it finally dies. But you still had that doubt before taking the new ability that he will be back for round 3...lol. I didn't trust the game at all. But that was it!

You will get this important ability called the 'Desolate Dive' which is required to unlock different parts of the kingdom and progress further in the game. So everyone has to kill it.
