Nameless mural with an excellent story
Located at: Pauyet Gallery, Ciego de Avila, Cuba.
In the middle of the remodeling process of the Pauyet Gallery, El Flaco, as all his friends know him, in his constant search for originality and with his transgressive personality, dared to play with the still fresh cement of a wall and began to create some lines that he said were his interpretation of the painting technique of his friend, the National Plastic Arts Award winner Nelson Domínguez. Days went by and that interpretation remained there dormant, longing to at least get closer to its objective, but aware that it seemed to have the bad luck that its creator was an exceptional artist, but with a mastery of an art very different from painting, that goldsmith had destined it to remain unfinished, but... What if it was a masterstroke of its creator? I personally believe it was.
Confident and aware of his friend's restless and creative character, El Flaco knew that it was only a matter of time before he would pass by and, like all passionate artists, would not be able to bear that sacrilege without trying to remedy it, and so it was, with such luck for me, that destiny put me in the right place at the right time.
It was an afternoon when "apparently" I didn't have much to do and I stopped by the Gallery. Sitting on a bench next to Isis, one of Flaco's daughters, we both made it obvious that we shared a total boredom, and that was when Nelson, who was also visiting and moments before had walked past that thing that evidenced his desire to look like art, stared at us for about 5 seconds that seemed eternal, suddenly, while grabbing us by the arm to force us to stand up, he sentenced :
"Get up, you can't be wasting time like this in life. "
We followed him still without understanding what he wanted, on the way he was putting in our hands a mud brick, some pieces of coal and some lime powder while he took out of his backpack a knob of sealant (at least that's what I think I heard) and something green that I could not distinguish well. With a huge smile, like that of a child playing his favorite game, he got down to work. He scratched the brick hard to extract a reddish powder, then did the same with the charcoal, except with the two pieces that he put in our hands with precise instructions to mark strongly with them every line that we discovered in that Mural. By the time we finished, he had done his alchemy and had separated in several beer cans cut in half, the pigments with which he began to create textures, lights and shadows. At that moment I remember perfectly well taking a step back while silently analyzing the movements of that artist, I tried to decipher what was going through his mind, I could never succeed, but from my perspective that mural was much improved compared to its initial state.

I still think it looks ugly, but I feel enormous pride and am amused when I show this picture and get the looks of, "What an ugly thing." Ironically it is one of my favorite works of art. As you can see, it is not signed, nor does it have a name, I am sure that for Nelson it was simply an unimportant exercise, not worthy of his signature, but for me it has an incalculable value, especially because that day I received a life lesson that I try not to forget, and precisely in silence and in a very introspective way I am sure that there is no better name for this work than: "Lesson of Life".

Nelson Domínguez is a renowned Cuban artist. A graduate of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts and the Higher Institute of Art of Havana, he has a versatile and extensive work in various disciplines, including painting, illustration, engraving, sculpture and ceramics. His more than one hundred exhibitions and multiple national and international awards endorse the high quality of his creations, scattered all over the world, some of them in private collections of personalities of the stature of the Queen of Holland, Steven Spielberg, Robert Redford and Liv Ullman.
His headquarters, the studio-gallery "Los Oficios", located in the Historic Center of Old Havana, houses a permanent exhibition of his work as well as personal and collective exhibitions of other Cuban creators.
Among his best known works are

- Alicia, national bird
This last one, in the words of its creator, from the creation of this piece "began to grow a collection that has circulated throughout almost the entire country, from Baracoa to the Isle of Youth", referring to the Collection "My friend Alicia" which reflects the relationship of admiration and friendship he had with Alicia Alonso, Prima Ballerina Assoluta:
"Choreographer and teacher, founder and director of the National Ballet of Cuba. Relevant personality in the history of stage dance, leading figure of classical ballet at the international level and distinguished personality of the Cuban national culture." *

En pleno proceso de remodelación de la Galería Pauyet, El Flaco, como lo conocemos todos sus amigos, en su constante búsqueda de la originalidad y con su personalidad transgresora se atrevió a jugar con el cemento todavía fresco de una pared y comenzó a crear unas líneas que según él eran su interpretación de la técnica de pintura de su amigo el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas Nelson Domínguez. Pasaron los días y aquella interpretación quedo allí dormida, anhelando acercarse al menos a su objetivo, pero consciente de que parecía tener la mala suerte de que su creador fuera un excepcional artista, pero con dominio de un arte muy distinto a la pintura, aquel orfebre la había destinado a permanecer inconclusa, pero… ¿Y si fue una jugada maestra de su creador? Yo personalmente creo que lo fue.
Confiado y conocedor del carácter inquieto y creativo de su amigo, el Flaco sabía que era solo cuestión de tiempo para que este pasara por allí y como todo artista de corazón, no pudiera soportar aquel sacrilegio sin intentar remediarlo, y así fue, con tanta suerte para mi, que el destino me puso en el lugar y el momento precisos.
Era una tarde en que “aparentemente” yo no tenía mucho que hacer y pasé por la Galería. Sentado en un banco junto a Isis, una de las hijas del Flaco, ambos hacíamos evidente que compartíamos un aburrimiento total, y fue entonces cuando Nelson, que también estaba de visita y momentos antes había pasado por delante de aquella cosa que evidenciaba sus ganas de parecer arte, nos miró fijamente durante unos 5 segundos que parecieron eternos, de repente, mientras nos agarraba del brazo para obligarnos a ponernos de pie, sentenció :
“Arriba, que no se puede estar perdiendo el tiempo así en la vida”.
Lo seguimos aún sin comprender lo que quería, en el trayecto nos iba poniendo en las manos un ladrillo de barro, algunos trozos de carbón y un poco de polvo de cal mientras sacaba de su mochila un pomo de sellador (al menos eso creo haber escuchado) y algo verde que no alcancé a distinguir bien. Con una enorme sonrisa, como la de un niño mientras juega su juego favorito, puso manos a la obra. Rayaba fuertemente el ladrillo para extraer un polvo rojizo, luego hizo lo mismo con el carbón, excepto con los dos pedazos que puso en nuestras manos con instrucciones precisas de marcar fuertemente con ellos cada línea que descubriéramos en aquel Mural. Para el momento en que terminamos, él había hecho su alquimia y tenía separados en varias latas de cerveza cortadas por la mitad, los pigmentos con los que comenzó a crear texturas, luces y sombras. En ese momento recuerdo perfectamente haber dado un paso atrás mientras en silencio analizaba los movimientos de aquel artista, intenté descifrar que pasaba por su mente, nunca pude lograrlo, pero desde mi perspectiva aquel mural mejoró mucho comparado con su estado inicial.

Aún hoy me parece feo, pero siento un enorme orgullo y me divierto cuando muestro su fotografía y percibo las miradas de: “Que cosa más fea”. Irónicamente es una de mis obras de arte preferidas. Como pueden apreciar no está firmada, tampoco tiene nombre, estoy seguro de que para Nelson fue simplemente un ejercicio sin importancia, que no es digno de llevar su firma, pero para mi tiene un valor incalculable, sobre todo porque aquel día recibí una lección de vida que hasta hoy intento no olvidar, y precisamente en silencio y de manera muy introspectiva tengo la seguridad de que no hay mejor nombre para esta obra que: “Lección de Vida”.

Nelson Domínguez es un renombrado artista cubano. Graduado en la Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro y en el Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, posee una versátil y extensa obra en diversas disciplinas, entre las que destacan, la pintura, la ilustración, el grabado, la escultura y la cerámica. Sus más de cien exposiciones y múltiples premios nacionales e internacionales avalan la gran calidad de sus creaciones, dispersas por todo el mundo, algunas de ellas en colecciones privadas de personalidades de la talla de La Reina de Holanda, Steven Spielberg, Robert Redford y Liv Ullman.
Su cuartel general, el Estudio – Galería «Los Oficios», enclavado en el Centro Histórico de la Habana Vieja alberga una muestra permanente de su obra además de exposiciones personales y colectivas de otros creadores cubanos.

Esta última, en las propias palabras de su creador: partir de la creación de esta obra “comenzó a crecer una colección que ha circulado por casi todo el país, desde Baracoa hasta la Isla de la Juventud”, refiriéndose a la Colección “Mi amiga Alicia” que refleja la relación de admiración y amistad que tenía con Alicia Alonso, Prima Ballerina Assoluta:
“Coreógrafa y maestra, fundadora y directora del Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Personalidad relevante en la historia de la danza escénica, figura cimera del ballet clásico en el ámbito internacional y personalidad insigne de la cultura nacional cubana.”
