Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple is probably the only major attraction of Mathura, even though the tour operators advertise about many other places. It's around 45 minutes drive from Vrindavan and continuing from my last post, we were already late leaving Vrindavan, so we asked the driver to best plan our day, as we had to go back to Agra. He took us straight to the
Govardhan Giriraj Temple.
Govardhana Hill is believed to be manifested from the heart of Lord Krishna to please Radha Rani and was exquisitely beautiful place for their pastimes. It was a fairy-tale like playground for the Lord and all his companions. There is a very interesting story behind the Govardhana Hill. When Lord Krishna was only sever years old, the people of Mathura were arranging to perform a Yangya to please Lord Indra to bless them with ample rain for good crops. But Lord Krishna convinced them to not do any ritual and rather focus on their work. Terrified with this, Lord Indra wreaked havoc with excessive rains and thunderstorms. Lord Krishna advised the villagers to go to the Govardhana Hill with all their cattle and he lifted the Govardhana Hill effortlessly with his left hand for seven days, under which the entire village took shelter. Moreover, the Lord did such magic that the villagers did not feel hungry or thirsty. Indra then realized with whom he was dealing with and asked the Lord to forgive him.

Mom went inside, and I was happy seeking the blessings of the lord sitting outside. I believe Lord is in everybody's heart - so do not do any sin against anyone.

If you are a vegetarian and sweet lover, then Mathura and Vrindavan has lot to offer.
We wanted to go to see the actual Govardhana Hill, but the driver could not find the proper way and roamed around a very narrow village road. So we advised to come out of that, on our way, he showed this from a distance and told us we have to climb the hill, so we decided to drive straight away to the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple.
They are not allowing outside vehicles from a distance of half kilometer and you will have to walk.
Entry is free, but you will have to leave your phone and Camera at a nearby counter, and there was rush, so we decided to go one by one.
You have to climb steep steps to go to the first floor and see the deity. The temple is not very ancient, because the original temple was destructed by Mughals and this one was built in 19th century. Even the Shahi Idgah mosque is there adjacent to the temple. We both completed our visit within half an hour.
The road in front of the temple is kind of a mini market and you will get some delicious sweets.
Before coming back we refreshed ourselves with a lovely tea.
Just in front of the entrance, this Potra Kund or Pavitra Kund ( a big pond) is there, and it's believed, first bath (after birth) of child Krishna happened here.
The driver was asking if we want to visit Barsana, the birthplace of Radha, which is 40 kilometers from Mathura, but we denied and drove straight to Agra from here, through the Express highway, which took around 4 and half hours. If you have time, you may plan for Barsana as well. Since long, Mom wished to see the iconic Taj Mahal, more to come on that....
