[ENG] On June 4 2021 and January 7 2022 I scaled the same peak - Mt. Śnieżka (Czech: Sněžka). Moreover, I trekked the same route. I am now preparing a presentation for a library and it struck me how the same places look differently half a year apart.
[POL] Przygotowując kolejną prelekcję dla Biblioteki w Czeladzi z cyklu "Korony Gór w Polsce", wpadłem na pomysł pokazania Śnieżki - bo to ona jest bohaterką odcinka 11 - w dwóch porach roku. 4 czerwca 2021 i 7 stycznia 2022 wszedłem na Śnieżkę tą samą trasą - z przełęczy Okraj. Zdjęcia robiłem w większości w tych samych miejscach. Zebrane w jeden post, pokazują dwie różne twarze tej samej góry.
[ENG] According to my planning map, the ascend should take 2:55hrs. Interestingly, however, in summer I needed 2:15hrs and in winter 1:50hrs
[POL] Mając zdjęcia robione w tych samych miejscach, porównałem sobie czasy wejścia. Mapa sugeruje 2:55h. Latem wejście zajęło mi 2:15h, natomiast zimą - 1:50h.
[ENG] During the Communists' times, the mountain was a meeting point between Czech and Polish dissidents. The story is shown on a board near Jelenka mountain cabin.
[POL] Za czasów komuny Śnieżka była miejscem spotkań czeskich i polskich dysydentów. Pełna konspiracja, fałszywe imiona i daty spotkań. A gdy doszło do zatrzymania, dysydenci udawali, że przemycają wódkę.
[ENG] My trail starts at ~1000m a.s.l. and the peak of Śnieżka is at 1603m a.s.l. The difference is enough for a complete change in the vegetation. The lower parts are covered with forest, while halfway thru, we see first bog pine and then only low grass and sort of montane moss.
[POL] Początek trasy to 1000m n.p.m. a szczyt Śnieżki ma 1603m. Różnica jest wystarczający by zobaczyć jak zmienia się roślinność. Na dole las, głównie iglasty. Powyżej schroniska Jelenka las ustępuje miejsca kosodrzewinie, a dalej już tylko mizerne trawy i porosty.
[ENG] At 1400m a.s.l. there's a famous view point called "Black Ridge". Can you spot the difference?
[POL] Na wysokości 1400m n.p.m. jest popularny punkt widokowy zwany Czarnym Grzbietem. Widoki, że hej - no chyba, że akurat jesteśmy w chmurze.
[ENG] From that point on, in sunny weather the hike is one long "wow". The views are terrific. In winter there was another "wow" - wind 85km/h and -10° C.
[POL] Moja letnia wędrówka od tego miejsca to było "och" i "ach" - jak tu pięknie. Zimą było "ach - ale wieje...". 85km/h przy temperaturze -10.
[ENG] There's a Meteo station on the summit. Plus a wooden chapel from 1665. In Winter, however, I was only interested in the building of the Czech Post - it serves as a shelter. One can buy coffee and snacks, but the most important thing is - there's warm and the wind doesn't get there.
[POL] Na szczycie jest kilka obiektów - słynna stacja Meteo i mniej słynna kaplica z 1665r. Oba ciekawe, ale zimą interesowała mnie tylko budka Czeskiej Poczty - tam jest ciepło i nie wieje wiatr.
