India is a country full of diverse communities and cultures. Several such communities are rural and/or tribal in origin. One such state having this diversity is Madhya Pradesh where, as per the 2001 census, there are 46 government-identified tribes. These include: the Bhils, Gonds, Sahariyas, Baigas, Kols, Bhariyas etc.

To create awareness about the different tribes of India and showcase their varied cultures, several Tribal Museums have been established in various states of India. These museums act as storytellers of local tribal heritage and present to audiences a slice of tribal life.

The Museum has six galleries. Full-scale architectural models of tribal homes, colourful art installations and live dance and singing performances give one a good idea of the specific tribal culture being represented. There is also a special focus is on art and how it is connected to the culture of the tribe. Artefacts of daily use are on display along with those that carry deep, symbolic, cultural & ritualistic significance. For example, there are objects of practical use that also have a meaning linked to a higher or supernatural power.
