I have never written a piece on a Reggae Song before but this track called Lightning by Reggae Artiste Mortimer was magic in paradise. It had me reliving my entire romantic life in one 5 minute video. It charts the journey of a couple from childhood crush all they way to adulthood as a married couple with their own children.
In this song it has the robust traditional sounds of a good reggae melody with drums, bass, shaker, trumpets and more. There is nothing like good instrumental music to really energize the soul. Layer that with Mortimer's vocals which in itself is an instrument and really digs deep, varying from smooth to raspy at times.
While you watch these kids experience innocent romance against the backdrop of a luscious green landscape with gushing waterfalls, life almost seems void of violence and turmoil. It almost feels like a better time and better world. Somewhere you can comfortably get lost.
Picture that girl that really grabbed your heart when you were a tween or teen. How you could see your future with her in your eyes. That's exactly what Mortimer captures in this beautiful almost ballad like melody. If you haven't been to Jamaica in a while this video will have you missing home. If you have never been, you might get the urge to come and possibly fall in love or fall in love again.
Sometimes I hear Reggae Music is dead, but everytime I hear a tune like this, I have no doubts it is alive and healthy. Mixed in with some Jazzy type singing I think you will be thoroughly impressed by this one.
