My Definition of Freedom

"Finally I have gained admission into the university, let me see if my dad will leave his work, to be monitoring my day-to-day activities since I won't be schooling in Lagos." This was the exact words of Benita at the first sight of her admission letter into the University of Benin. Benita was the only girl of her parents and is everything to her parents. Hence, anything she ever wanted was always made available. Despite the fact that all her needs were
all met, she never felt happy because she feels she's been restricted from many things her classmates, friends and neighbors do.

School has finally resumed, and as usual all she asked for were all provided. Her dad drove her from Lagos to her apartment in school, before leaving he said to her "Benny my baby girl, time has come for you to make decisions about your life and this will determine the person you become tomorrow. "Here is like a universe in a city, you will see, meet and interact with different kinds of persons with different background and ideology, but it's left for you to choose the ship from the goat." In order to avoid the long advice her dad is known for, she responded him by stating that she is big enough now to take care of herself, that he shouldn't worry much about her.

Less than two years of gaining admission, Benny has become another person entirely; she was into drugs, and never attends classes. She turned to be one of the campus reigning babes. She started prostitution on the ground that she is old enough to be catering for herself. She sacrificed everything her parents taught and imbibed in her as a result of her desire to be FREE.

Yes!, the essence of freedom can never be over-emphasized, however, the misconception of what being free really means has led many to becoming what they never thought they would be. Freedom doesn't necessarily mean the act of being free from certain restrictions or the act of being allowed to do, go or eat whatever one feels like. To me, Freedom is the act of becoming oneself without the interference of external forces. In other words, freedom is the act of living ones desired life in fullness without hinderances. A free man is a man who envisions himself and is unhindered by anything from becoming that person he has envisioned himself to be. A free man is a man less-influenced by others' ways of life but more concerned of being himself!. Being free is synonymous to being fulfilled.
No one is actually free in our world today, not even the wealthiest man nor the most powerful man!. You know why? Because we all under the influence of many external forces such as time, death, illness, etc,.
