New years party in Suriname!

So in my country of Suriname (South - America).

One of the most celebrated holidays is 31st December Owru yari (Oud op nieuw = Old to new)
Personally number 1 on my list and I always tell people from other countries that they have to witness this at least one time in their lives.

Owru Yari translates to old year.

On this day everyone goes to the city for a huge party.
Roads are closed off and you get to see people you haven't seen all year or even in years.
This day is used to forgive everyone you had misunderstandings with and wish them a new year of good stuff.

This day is the closest we have to peace on earth in our country.

This day starts at around 10 in the morning and what do you do when you reach the city?

  • You drink
  • You dance
  • You walk around
  • pagara estafette (basically shooting off fireworks in the middle of the street at noon)

The party goes on till 6/7 at night and then you go home to your families to wait for 12 at night.
After 12 a lot of us go out again to keep partying in the new year.

This is by far the most anticipated party in our country.

It does happen sometimes that there are accidents, but most of the time it goes off without a hitch
