Hello dear Hive Community! Today I want to share with you one of my favorites national traditions, it´s about the Posadas (which more approach translation is “Inn” [noun] in former times, a house providing food and lodging for travelers. Source) I celebrate them since I was a kid and again, I have the value opportunity to enjoy it again ☺. But first let me give you a quick context about this beautiful tradition 😁.
During the month of December, the Mexican people celebrate a number of events. Posada Mexicana is one of them. Mexican Posadas are a type of community Christmas party that involve families, neighbors, and friends coming together to celebrate the Christmas Eve Mass. They usually involve singing, games, food, drinks, and Christmas music.
Mexican Christmas Posadas usually happen during the last week of December. Many Americans who travel to Mexico don’t realize that Christmas celebrations begin during this week and end during the Christmas holidays.
¡Hola querida Comunidad de Hive! Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una de mis tradiciones nacionales favoritas, se trata de las Posada. Las celebro desde que era niño y de nuevo, tengo la valiosa oportunidad de volver a disfrutarlas ☺. Pero primero déjame darte un rápido contexto sobre esta hermosa tradición 😁.
Durante el mes de diciembre, el pueblo mexicano celebra una serie de eventos. La Posada Mexicana es uno de ellos. Las posadas mexicanas son un tipo de fiesta navideña comunitaria en la que se reúnen familias, vecinos y amigos para celebrar la misa de Nochebuena. Suelen incluir cantos, juegos, comida, bebidas y música navideña.
Las posadas navideñas mexicanas suelen celebrarse durante la última semana de diciembre. Muchos estadounidenses que viajan a México no se dan cuenta de que las celebraciones navideñas comienzan durante esta semana y terminan durante las fiestas de Navidad.
The idea of Mexican Posadas is to create a celebration between people of the same family in a community. Posadas usually happens on Christmas Eve in different neighborhoods and towns of Mexico.
Posada is a special meal and it involves the family coming together. This is often with the help of friends and neighbors to create the meal. Often, it’s the food that provides a lot of the traditions in Posadas.
La idea de las Posadas mexicanas es crear una celebración entre personas de la misma familia en una comunidad. Las posadas suelen tener lugar en la víspera de Navidad en diferentes barrios y pueblos de México.
La posada es una comida especial y en ella se reúne la familia. A menudo se hace con la ayuda de amigos y vecinos para crear la comida. A veces, es la comida la que proporciona gran parte de las tradiciones en las Posadas.

The following is a testimony of what happens specifically in my street, the posadas are a representation of the biblical scene of the birth of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, therefore the celebration begins with a litany in which they walk the "pilgrims" (which basically is a model of the moment in which Jesus Christ is born in his manger) along the street until, finally the model and the people around it go to ask for "inn" to the house of a neighbor, for which the respective prescribed dialogues are read, with a particular intonation. When the end of the dialogues is reached, the doors of the house are opened, just as Joseph and Mary were able to enter so that Jesus Christ could be born. Then, the respective prayers proper to the biblical events prior to the birth of Jesus Christ are said.
Lo siguiente es un testimonio de lo que sucede específicamente en mi calle, las posadas son una representación de la escena bíblica del nacimiento de Jesucristo en Jerusalén, por ello el festejo inicia con una letanía en la que pasean a los “peregrinos” (Qué básicamente es una maqueta del momento en el que Jesucristo nace en su pesebre) a lo largo de la calle hasta, que finalmente la maqueta y las personas a su alrededor van a pedir “posada” a la casa de algún vecino, para lo que se leen los respectivos diálogos prescritos, con una entonación particular. Cuando se ha llegado al final de dichos diálogos, se abren las puertas de la morada, así como José y María pudieron entrar para que Jesucristo pudiera nacer. A continuación, se hacen los respectivos rezos propios de los acontecimientos bíblicos anteriores al nacimiento de Jesucristo.
After the offerings, the fun party begins. Previously the neighbors organize themselves so that each one can contribute each typical element of the posadas, beginning with the piñatas, in which the youngest ones of the street have fun trying to break the cheerful cardboard figure, which is usually filled with contemporary candies, but can also contain seasonal fruit such as tangerines, jicamas and a very particular one from Mexico, the Tejocote, among others. While the others around them chant a cheerful song that motivates the participant and at the same time marks the time left for the end of their turn.
Después de las ofrendas, inicia la divertida fiesta. Previamente los vecinos se organizan para que cada uno pueda aportar cada elemento típico de las posadas, comenzando con las piñatas, en la que los más pequeños de la calle se divierten intentando romper la alegre figura de cartón, que usualmente esta rellena de dulces contemporáneos, pero también puede contener fruta de temporada como mandarinas, jícamas y uno muy particular de México, el Tejocote, entré otras. Mientras los demás a su alrededor corean una alegre canción que motiva al participante y a su vez marca el tiempo que le resta para que termine su turno.
A little later they start serving the punch, which is a sweet hot drink composed of various cooked fruits, most of them citrus, which is often enjoyed with small cane sticks that are very enjoyable to bite into 😋. This drink is served mainly for the purpose of warming up the body a bit on these cold dates when we are at least two hours outside at night.
Un poco después comienzan a servir el ponche, que es una dulce bebida caliente compuesta por varias frutas cocidas, la mayoría de ellas cítricas, que muchas veces se disfruta con pequeñas varas de caña que son muy disfrutables al morder 😋. Esta bebida se sirve principalmente con el propósito de calentar un poco el cuerpo en estas frías fechas en las que estamos al menos dos horas afuera en la noche.

Later they start offering the food, which is depending on each family what they can serve to the neighbors in the street, so it is usually something simple but appetizing 😄, usually typical Mexican stews, often accompanied by Mexican fried rice served in tortillas, although it can also vary a lot from that. In all this time neighbors can take the opportunity to talk to each other, or at least for their daughters and sons to play together, something that would not normally happen in other circumstances. So it is a great event that encourages congregation and unity among neighbors, as well as among family members 😊.
Más tarde inician a ofrecer la comida, que es dependiendo de cada familia lo que pueda servir a los vecinos de la calle, por lo que suele ser algo sencillo pero apetitoso 😄, la cual normalmente son guisados típicos mexicanos, acompañados usualmente de arroz frito a la mexicana servido en tortillas, aunque también puede variar mucho de eso. En todo este tiempo los vecinos pueden aprovechar para hablar entre ellos, o al menos para que sus hijas e hijos jueguen juntos, algo que no sucedería normalmente en otras circunstancias. Por lo que es un gran evento que fomenta la congregación y unidad entre vecinos, así como entre los integrantes de las familias 😊.
This is what they served in one of the posadas, it is a rice taco on the left and a chicarrón (fried pork skin) taco in green sauce, very tasty 😋💖. /Esto es lo que sirvieron en una de las posadas, se trata de un taco de arroz a la izquierda y un taco de chicarrón (piel de cerdo frita) en salsa verde, muy ricos 😋💖.
After everyone has finished enjoying the delicious food offered, the distribution of "aguinaldos" begins, which are small bags of sweets, most of them already very commercial, but at the beginning of the tradition, and it can still be seen in some towns, the aguinaldo consisted of some simple and even homemade candies, called "dulces de colación" along with seasonal fruits. Both in the past and now, aguinaldos are merely designated for the little ones in the street, just like piñatas, since they are the ones who can better enjoy the treats and sweet flavors offered by this beautiful tradition. 🥳
Después de que todos hayan terminado de disfrutar de los delicios alimentos ofrecidos, inicia la repartición de “aguinaldos”, que son pequeñas bolsas de dulces, la mayoría ya muy comerciales, pero al inició de la tradición, y todavía se puede ver en algunos pueblos, el aguinaldo consistía en algunos caramelos sencillos e incluso caseros, llamados “dulces de colación” junto con frutas de temporada. Tanto en el pasado como ahora, los aguinaldos están meramente designados para los más pequeños de la calle, al igual que las piñatas, puesto que son ellos quienes pueden disfrutar mejor de las golosinas y los dulces sabores que ofrecen esta hermosa tradición. 🥳
And that's how, amidst the joy and excitement of many families and mainly their children, how a posada day ends. 😊
But that's it, just one day, since the posadas are held for 6 or even 7 days in a row! partly to fully represent the biblical events prior to the birth of Jesus Christ, which should culminate on December 24, date on which the vast majority of Mexican families celebrate Christmas 😁, but that is another tradition that I might get to explain in another different post, if you are interested in learning more about the culture of central Mexico, and especially in times of Christmas. ☺
Y es así, entre la alegría y la emoción de muchas familias y de principalmente sus niños, como termina un día de posada. 😊
Pero es eso, solo un día, ya que ¡las posadas se realizan por 6 o incluso 7 días seguidos!, en parte para realmente representar por completo los eventos bíblicos anteriores al nacimiento de Jesucristo, los cuales deberían culminar el 24 de diciembre, fecha en la que la gran mayoría de las familias mexicanas celebran la navidad 😁, pero esa es otra tradición que quizá pueda llegar a explicar en otro post diferente, sí es que a ustedes les interesa conocer más sobre la cultura del centro de México, y en especial en épocas decembrinas. ☺
In my case, I have enjoyed the posadas since my childhood, it was always fun to participate in this beautiful tradition accompanied by the other children in my street 😊. It is partly because of them, among several other things, that winter is one of my favorite seasons of the year. 💖
En mi caso, he disfrutado de las posadas desde toda mi infancia, siempre fue muy divertido poder participar en esta hermosa tradición acompañado de los otros niños de mi calle 😊. Es en parte por ellas, entre otras varias cosas, por la que el invierno es de mis temporadas del año favoritas. 💖
These posadas had been forcibly stopped during the two previous years, when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak in the country 😓, but finally as a result of the latest sanitary and public health measures that have been taken, the cases of infection have decreased considerably and that allowed to resume them.
And even, regardless of the latest world news, the posadas in the downtown area are in "danger of extinction" since very few people practice them, due to how complicated and tedious they can be when it comes to organizing them among all the neighbors. 😞
Estas posadas se habían dejado de realizar forzosamente durante los dos años anteriores, cuando la pandemia de COVID-19 estaba en su mayor auge en el país 😓, pero finalmente a raíz de las ultimas medidas sanitarías y de salud publica que se han tomado, los casos de infección han disminuido considerablemente y eso permitió retomarlas.
E incluso, independientemente de las ultimas novedades de mundiales, las posadas en la zona centro están en “peligro de extinción” ya que muy calles las practican, debido a lo complicadas y tediosas que pueden llegar a ser a la hora de organizarse entre todos los vecinos. 😞
