Africans are of the belief that a child that has dreadlocks from birth has some spiritual potentials which may include the gift of healing, dreaming, seeing the future, and so on.

It is interesting to observe that in our world today so many people visit their stylists to make dreadlocks for the sake of fashion, not paying attention to the surrounding beliefs that is associated with it.

Jamaicans have adopted a name that is well known across the world for dreadlocks. It is popularly known as the Rastafarian hairstyle. In fact, they claim they are the root of dreadlocks but this is not true. A lot of Africans have been birthed with natural dreadlocks.

The Yoruba people of Nigeria names a child that was born with dreadlocks as "Dada" and the child is believed to be unique and special.

There are popular beliefs that the strength of such special children are tied to their hair (dreadlocks) and it must be handled with care. The natural dreadlocks cannot just be touched by anyone and anyone that touches it is mandated to "appease" the child with money or tie a cowry to the dreadlocks, this is to prevent any bad occurrence from happening to the child.

Today, dreadlocks that used to be seen as a type of hairstyle that is unkempt or have some spiritual undertone have now become a trendy style that has been embraced by men and women of different ages and social class.

These trends have made it a difficult task to identify the natural dreads from the one made by stylists.

There are different reasons why people chose to lock their hair and it may have to do with a way of reducing the time spent on hair every week or every two weeks. Most women visit the salon to make their hair after about three weeks, so with dreads it may take months before they go to salon. It also save money - there is no spending on attachments and weavons every time.
