For some time I was a photography enthusiast. I loved to take my camera and take pictures of everything and everyone. Although I have never been an expert, my experience as a graphic designer over more than 20 years helps me to look for interesting pictures and in turn, I try to use some of the fundamental rules when firing the shutter. At first with analog cameras and then with digital ones.
Avenue des Champs Elysees, Paris, France. In 2011 I visited the city of love as the capital of France is commonly called. During a tour made in Paris aboard a tourist bus, I had the opportunity to take many pictures. The one you see above was taken from the second level of the bus at the front. It is a very busy avenue and very popular with tourists because besides having a lot of commerce it also connects several sites of great historical importance such as the Arc de Triomphe which does not appear in the photo because we had left it behind and the Louvre Museum which is the building that you see at the end after the obelisk of the Place Calderon and the Tuileries Garden that was built in the seventeenth century. See that it is a complete cobblestone road.
Trans-Andean Highway in the Paramo del Zumbador, Tachira, Venezuela. This mountainous area is part of the extensive Andean Cordillera of South America and is very close to where I had the good fortune to be born and spend my first years of life. In an interesting journey that I made through much of the western part of the country I arrived at this beautiful spot of the trans-Andean road that as you can notice the dense fog prevented sunlight almost entirely and forced us to slow down the march.
When I became a dad, I made the decision to move my office to my home to be with my family full time. That marked the end of my adventures with the camera to dedicate myself almost exclusively to record another kind of adventure: the growth of my two children. And so the camera came to be used only for those special moments such as birthdays, traditional parties, family reunions, outings to the park, and the occasional trip out of town.
Toledo, Spain. In one of the narrow streets of this historic city you can see that everything is covered in stone. The cobblestones of the street and the vast majority of buildings with such an ancient appearance make us immediately think of the Middle Ages.
Unfortunately, much of the photographic material that I had accumulated since my beginnings were lost in that last move. I only have a few rolls of film and some photos on paper. I will try to develop or transfer little by little all that material to digital.
Via di Ripetta Street, Rome, Italy. Another city with a lot of history that also has a lot of streets lined with cobblestones. This image was captured while strolling inside the city's tourist bus. The architecture is especially peculiar with its large Romanesque-style windows very typical in Italy.
Today, my children are long past the baby stage and have secured some individuality, so my wife and I are starting to resume some activities that we had put aside. Additionally, having joined this platform has reminded me of my great love for photography, I have dusted off my old camera and have once again felt the desire to experiment visually.
Granville Street Bridge -Pont Rue Granville-, Vancouver, Canada. One of the busiest districts of Vancouver is Granville Island. There you can get important art galleries, parks, a large public market where you get everything, restaurants, lots of maritime activity and you can even do a beer tasting. In the photo, you can see that it is really busy with the line of vehicles as you cross the bridge that connects to the island.
Along with these new photographic experiments, I have also been organizing and cataloging my material so that it does not become an impossible mission to get something that is compatible with a particular theme. As much of what I have corresponds to trips to various countries, then I have created folders that gather similar images, such as sunsets, city views, architecture, animals, flora, streets, and one or another element that has caught my attention.
Via dei Fori Imperiali, Rome, Italy. Being in Rome, one day we decided to walk through the historic center and by late afternoon we had reached the vicinity of the Colosseum. I found interesting the combination of modernity and antiquity that could be seen from the street, so I stopped in the middle of the road and this is what it turned out to be. What this view must have been like two centuries ago, can you imagine? To the sides, you can see the Pinion Pines, characteristic trees of Rome.
And while I was doing this task, the idea of creating a series of publications entitled: FROM HERE AND FROM THERE was born. Why from here and from there? Well, the reason is simple, they are images with similar characteristics, but taken in different places, in different cities, even different countries. With this series, I want to show the great similarity that we have and that brings us closer, as well as the subtle differences that distinguish us and that are part of the vast culture we have inherited. Another Roman street that could go unnoticed if it were not for the fact that in the background is the largest Catholic church in the world in the smallest country in the world, St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Curiously in the photo appears one of these tiny vehicles that are suitable for the narrow streets of the city.

Durante un recorrido realizado por Paris a bordo de un autobús turístico tuve la oportunidad de registrar muchas imágenes. La que ven arriba de estas líneas fue tomada desde el segundo nivel del autobús en su parte delantera. Es una avenida muy concurrida y transitada por los turistas porque además de tener mucho comercio también conecta varios sitios de gran importancia histórica como el Arco del Triunfo —en francés, Arc de Triomphe— que no aparece en la foto porque la habíamos dejado atrás y el Museo de Louvre —en francés, Musée du Louvre— que es el edificio que se ve al final después del obelisco de la plaza Calderón y del Jardín de las Tullerías que fue construido en el siglo XVII. Eso marcó el final de mis aventuras con la cámara para dedicarme casi con exclusividad a registrar otro tipo de aventura: el crecimiento de mis dos hijos. Y así la cámara pasó a ser usada sólo para aquellos momentos especiales como cumpleaños, fiestas tradicionales, reuniones familiares, salidas al parque y uno que otro viaje fuera de la ciudad. Lamentablemente mucho del material fotográfico que había acumulado desde mis inicios se perdió en esa última mudanza. Sólo conservo algunos rollos de película y algunas fotos en papel. Otra ciudad con mucha historia que también cuenta con una gran cantidad de calles revestidas por adoquines. Esta imagen fue capturada mientras paseaba dentro del autobús turístico de la ciudad. La arquitectura es especialmente peculiar con sus grandes ventanales al estilo romanilla muy típicas en Italia. Hoy día, mis hijos ya han superado hace rato la etapa de bebés y han asegurado cierta individualidad, de modo que mi esposa y yo estamos empezando a retomar algunas actividades que habíamos dejado de lado. Adicionalmente, haber entrado en esta plataforma me ha hecho recordar mi gran afición al mundo de la fotografía, he desempolvado mi antigua cámara y nuevamente he sentido el deseo de experimentar visualmente. A la par de estos nuevos experimentos fotográficos, también he estado organizando y catalogando mi material para que no se convierta en una misión imposible conseguir algo que sea compatible con un tema en particular. Como gran parte de lo que tengo corresponde a viajes a varios países, entonces he creado carpetas que reúnen imágenes similares, tales como atardeceres, vistas de ciudades, arquitectura, animales, flora, calles y uno que otro elemento que me haya llamado la atención. Vía de los Foros Imperiales –Via dei Fori Imperiali–, Roma, Italia. Estando en Roma, un día decidimos caminar por el casco histórico y al caer la tarde habíamos llegado a las inmediaciones del Coliseo. Me pareció interesante la combinación que se divisaba desde la calle entre modernidad y antigüedad, así que me paré en medio de la carretera y esto fue lo que resultó. Cómo habrá sido esta vista hace dos siglos, ¿se lo pueden imaginar? Hacia los lados se pueden apreciar los Pinos Piñoneros, árboles característicos de Roma. Y mientras realizaba esta tarea fue así como nació la idea de crear una serie de publicaciones intituladas: DE AQUÍ Y DE ALLÁ. ¿Por qué de aquí y de allá? Bueno la razón es simple, son imágenes con características similares, pero tomadas en distintos sitios, en distintas ciudades, incluso distintos países. Con esta serie quiero mostrar la gran similitud que tenemos y que nos acercan, así como las sutiles diferencias que nos distinguen y que forman parte de la vasta cultura que hemos heredado.
