El 24 de junio, se celebra el nacimiento de San Juan Bautista en Venezuela, es una de las tradiciones más populares en el país y una de las que más se ha perpetuado de generación en generación desde el siglo XVII. Su celebración en Venezuela se dio a través de la descendencia afrodescendiente, quienes en su momento ya la celebraban entre ellos, con su música, bailes y fiestas, pero que por medio de la iglesia católica, procedieron a unir sus costumbres y veneración, con la celebración del santo. Uniendo estas festividades con los actos religiosos, como una misa en su honor y el recorrido del santo desde la casa de su cuidador, hasta la iglesia y por toda la localidad, donde se hace el recorrido.
Es el único santo al cual se le celebra su nacimiento, junto al Niño Jesús; punto muy interesante. Las celebraciones empiezan a partir del 23 de junio, hasta el final del día 24 de junio, se procede a adornar los altares del santo, a organizar los bailes, vestuarios que son muy coloridos y entre danzas al ritmo del tambor y canto se pasea al santo, desde el 24 de junio bien temprano, se procede a sacar al santo de la casa de su cuidador, hasta la iglesia al ritmo de los tambores, luego se procede a dar una misa en su honor, luego de esta, se sigue con las celebraciones, entre los feligreses y acompañantes que duran todo el día, hasta el amanecer del día siguiente.
Se acostumbra en la noche de San Juan, a cortarse el cabello para que crezca más abundante y fuerte, también, se hacen varios rituales entre ellos, prender fogatas de ser posible frente al mar, bailar alrededor de ellas, cantar, se dice que si pasas por encima de este fuego 9 veces, tendrás un año bendecido y de gran fortuna y las parejas que lo hagan juntas, tendrán una relación duradera y feliz. Mi abuela decía, que esa noche, justo a las 12 de la noche, se podía ver en el agua cualquier visión acerca de algo que preguntaras, en el café, en el té, incluso se dice, que se agarra un huevo de gallina, se hace una petición y se vierte en un vaso de vidrio con agua y se puede ver reflejada la respuesta, persona o cosa solicitada.

Para ello hay personas que se encargan de organizar este evento durante todo el año, para brindar el mejor acompañamiento, a los feligreses, turistas o personas que se acerquen a participar en la celebración, que dicho sea de paso es bien conocida.
Personalmente, este día es mágico para mi, pues siempre llega acompañado de misterios y ritos, aparte de las demás costumbres y en cada familia venezolana se tiene alguna anécdota, tanto así que hasta documentales de misterio se han hecho al respecto. Es un día donde se pone de manifiesto la perseverancia de un pueblo en mantener sus tradiciones y costumbres. Celebraciones que son dignas de admirar y compartir.
